Support : DialogLink 5 : Enhanced Features : Llinking Pane

Linking Pane access to Help and Information, Set Links, Session Navigator

DialogLink now features a Linking Pane with sections for Help and Information, Set Links and Session Navigator. The contents of individual sections can be hidden or shown and the Linking Pane itself can be resized, changed from right to left display or hidden completely.

Linking Pane display options

Right or left side display or hide

You can choose to have the Linking Pane display on the right or left side of the screen or to be hidden completely.

To change the Linking Pane display:

  • In the toolbar, click View > Linking Pane and select Left, Right or None.

Hiding/showing Linking Pane sections

The Help and Information, Set Links and Session Navigator sections of the Linking Pane may be individually hidden or shown.

To hide or show a section:

  • Click the arrow icon in the top right of the section to hide the contents of the section and click again to show.

Changing the size of the Linking Pane

The width of the Linking Pane can be resized to make its area bigger or smaller.

To resize the Linking Pane:

  • Move your mouse cursor to any point on the border between the Linking Pane and Retrieve buffer (the cursor icon changes when you are over the border). Left-click your mouse and drag the border to the desired position then release your mouse.

Help and Information

When you are logged in to Dialog, the Help and Information links make it easy to access Bluesheet , rate, and other information for your active file(s).

To see the Bluesheet for an active file, click the file name in the Help and Information section of the Linking Pane and select Help. The Bluesheet opens in a new window.

To see pricing information for an active file, click the file name in the Help and Information section of the Linking Pane and select Rates. The Bluesheet opens at the Rates section in a new window.

Note: If you are online and connected to at least one file but you do not see file names in the Help and Information section of the Linking Pane, click the arrow icon in the heading bar to show file name(s).

Set Links

The sets you have created since your last Begin command display in the Set Links section of the Linking Pane. If you click a set, available Linking choices are displayed. Linking choices include a Tasks list of Dialog functions and typical extension searches for the file(s) you are currently searching. For example, in Derwent World Patents Index®, (DWPISM) selecting Set Link Full Text Patents > Full Text Patents by Publication Number is an easy way to take the Publication Numbers from your results set records and use them as search terms in the full-text patents databases.

Also see Record Links for link choices at the record level.

To use Set Links:

  • Click a set number in the Set Links section of the Linking Pane and select one of the choices presented. In some cases, a sub-menu may display for you to make another selection.

Tasks is always a choice in the Set Links menu. Its sub-menu presents Dialog functions:

Sort — opens a Choose Fields for Sort window that allows you to select from a list of available Sort fields. A checkbox beside your selected Sort field name(s) allows you to specify an ascending or descending sort on that field. On OK, a sorted results set is created in the Retrieve buffer.

Linking Pane

Rank — opens a Choose Rank Field window that allows you to select from a list of available Rank fields. Results and subsequent options are as for VISUAL RANK.

Linking Pane

Map — opens a Choose Map Field window that allows you to select from a list of available Map fields. On OK, a Map command is entered into the Type-Ahead buffer.

Linking Pane

Duplicates (Remove Duplicates, Identify Duplicates, Duplicates Only) — The command to remove/identify duplicates in the selected set is automatically entered (Example: RD S1) and a results set is created in the Retrieve buffer.
Save Alert — opens the Alert window. See SAVE ALERT.
Save Search — opens the Edit Save Search window. See SAVE SEARCH.
Save Temp — opens the Edit Temp Search window. See SAVE SEARCH.

Other Set Links choices are file-specific but extract terms from your selected set to use as search terms in a new search.

  • For Tasks, make selections as appropriate to complete the task (refer to the online help for each commands for more detail).

For other Set Links, the terms extracted from your set display in a pop-up window. Deselect any terms you do not wish to include in the new search and click OK.

Linking Pane

The terms extracted from the search set are incorporated into a new search command, including ADD or BEGIN a new database if appropriate. If the checkbox Send commands to input buffer is checked, the command is entered into the Type-Ahead buffer, giving you an opportunity to change the files slated for searching etc before initiating the new search. If the checkbox is not checked, the new search executes in predetermined file(s) and results display in the Retrieve buffer.

Linking Pane

Session Navigator

The Session Navigator section of the Linking Pane displays commands entered since you opened DialogLink and allows you to quickly navigate to a specific point in the Retrieve buffer, including to a specific record from a TYPE command.

To use the Session Navigator:

  • Click to select a command in the Session Navigator section of the Linking Pane. The Retrieve buffer content scrolls so that the selected command becomes the first visible line in the Retrieve buffer. If you wish to navigate to a specific record TYPEd, click the + beside the TYPE command to display a list of records TYPEd by that command, then click the desired record number.
