Support : DialogLink 5 : Enhanced Features : Marking Retrieve Buffer Content

Marking Retrieve Buffer Content

When you open the DialogLink program, the window you see is the Dialog Session window. Behind this window is the Marked Text window, accessed by clicking the Display Marked Text/Display Retrieve Buffer icon Display Marked Text/Display Retrieve Buffer icon in the DialogLink toolbar or Window > Marked Text in the menu bar. The Mark function allows you to transfer selected text from the Retrieve buffer in the Dialog Session window to the Marked Text window, where you can edit or add your own comments before printing and/or saving the saving the window contents.

Note: Record links are not active in the Marked Text window.

Transferring text from the Retrieve buffer to the Marked Text window

To transfer selected text from the Dialog Session window to the Marked Text window:

  1. Select your desired text in the Dialog Session window by left-clicking your mouse and dragging it over the text.

  2. Click the Mark icon Mark icon in the DialogLink toolbar, right-click your mouse and select Mark or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+M. You can also click Edit > Mark in the menu bar.

You can repeat the select and mark sequence as often as desired. Each time, your new marked item is added below the last item in the Marked Text window.

Your marked text remains in the Marked Text window until you close DialogLink.

  3. To transfer the entire text of the Dialog Session window to the Marked Text window, click the Mark icon in the DialogLink toolbar or click Edit > Mark

Moving between Dialog session and the Marked Text window

To move between the Dialog Session window and the Marked Text window, click the Display Marked Text/Display Retrieve Buffer icon Display Marked Text/Display Retrieve Buffer icon in the DialogLink toolbar. When you move between windows, the icon and its label change to reflect the window you are in. You can also use Window in the menu bar to select Dialog Session or Marked Text.

Saving the Content of the Marked Text Window

All or selected parts of the Marked Text window contents can be saved as a Microsoft Word document or as an RTF, HTML, PDF or TXT file.
The formatting of the saved content will be as in the Marked Text window. If you will post-process the file to add formatting, consider using the Word Report feature. This allows you to set up one or more templates that instruct DialogLink: to include or exclude fields, apply varied fonts and styles and automatically insert boilerplate text. This can be a time saver if you regularly reformat search results in the same way.

To save content from the Marked Text window:

  1. If you don’t want to save the entire contents of the Marked Text window, select the text you want to save. You do not need to select text if you want to save everything.

  2. Click File > Save then choose All or Selected. DialogLink opens the Choose a file to save to window.

  3. Name the file and choose from Word, RTF, HTML, PDF or TXT formats. Click Save. The file is saved to the Download directory in your selected file format.
