VIEW

Abbreviation: none
Command Format: VIEW
VIEW <file name>
VIEW <DialogLink directory name>
VIEW <DialogLink directory name>/<file name>
VIEW <URL>
Availability: DialogLink 5

The VIEW command can be used to see a list of files in a Dialog > Link directory such as Download or Scripts, to open a file in its associated application, or to open a web page in a browser window. The Dialog > Link path is normally located below My Documents. VIEW can be used when you are connected to Dialog or off-line.

The basic VIEW command functions like a Windows application File > Open command. It opens a Files to View window that defaults to display the contents of the Download directory. Highlight a file name and click Open to view the contents of the file in its associated application.

Other VIEW command formats provide the following:

  • VIEW <file name>
Opens the specified file in its associated application. The file must be located in the Download directory. Include the file extension such as .txt, .doc, .htm, .xml.
    Example:
    VIEW drugpipeline.xml

  • VIEW <DialogLink folder name>
Opens a Files to View window that defaults to display the contents of the specified DialogLink folder — Accounts, Download, Graphics, Logs or Scripts. The folder specified must be located in the path My Documents > Dialog >Link. Highlight a file name and click Open to view the contents of the file in the associated application.
    Example:

    VIEW scripts

  • VIEW < DialogLink folder name>/<file name>
Opens the specified file in its associated application. Include the file extension such as .txt, .doc, .htm, .xml.
    Examples:
    VIEW scripts/step.txt
    VIEW download/drugdev.doc

  • VIEW <URL>
Opens your default browser and loads the specified web page. URL specifications may start with HTTP, HTTPS, or WWW. Note: if the URL does not end with .COM, .ORG, .EDU or .NET you need to include ‘HTTP’ in the address.
    Examples:
    VIEW www.dialog.com
    VIEW http://www.bbc.co.uk

Note: View can also be used to display records when using the RANK command. Review RANK for more information.
