Classification Codes and Headings in Ei Compendex

The CAL classification codes comprise a numeric classification scheme that segments the literature in Compendex into broad technical subject areas. A primary heading is assigned to each document to reflect its main subject emphasis with up to five additional subheadings possible, describing additional concepts expressed in the original document and/or expanding on the concept represented by the primary term.

Here are examples of the energy headings in Compendex:

525 (ENERGY MANAGEMENT)
525.1 (ENERGY RESOURCES)
525.2 (ENERGY CONSERVATION)
525.3 (ENERGY UTILIZATION)
525.4 (ENERGY LOSSES/ DISSIPATION)
525.5 (ENERGY CONVERSION)
525.6 (ENERGY POLICY)
525.7 (ENERGY STORAGE)

Use CC=525? to retrieve all energy headings and subheadings. Read this article for more information on class codes in Compendex.

Dear Colleague

Ron RodriquesContinued rising energy costs and focus on global warming place the topics of energy and the environment front and center in our newspapers and news broadcasts.

The collection of energy and environment information on Dialog and DataStar has continued to grow with the addition of important archival data in Compendex, new energy sources in McGraw-Hill Publications and access to technical material unavailable elsewhere in TULSA.

In addition, read the survey on energy to see how company executives and policymakers worldwide are focusing on this important issue.

A final note: in the future, news about energy and the environment will be incorporated into the "Engineering & High Tech Newsletter." Sign up if you do not already receive this newsletter.

Ei Compendex® Adds Coverage Back to 1884

ElectricityEi Compendex has become even more valuable for scientific research across the globe. With the addition of 1.7 million records back to 1884, you can now find information about virtually every major technical innovation. Energy and the environment are among the topics with archival data.
Information is divided into three files allowing you to select the exact data you want to search. Check the Bluesheet to see dates of coverage for each database.

SciTech Data Expanded on DataStar with the Addition of TULSA (Petroleum Abstracts)

oil rigTULSA (Petroleum Abstracts) (TULS, TUSL), the world's leading source of published information on oil and gas exploration, production, transport and storage, is now available on DataStar. Petroleum Abstracts contains full bibliographic citations, abstracts and indexing of scientific articles, patents, meeting papers and government reports of interest to geologists, geophysicists, petroleum engineers and other professionals in the oil and gas exploration and production industry.

Information in TULSA comes from 300 journals and more than 200 conference proceedings, plus patent gazettes and fulltext patents, government documents and reports, dissertations, books, maps and many other sources. In addition, TVOC Vocabulary file (TVOC) is an invaluable resource in searching the file as it gives you access to the controlled descriptor terms used in TULSA.

Unavailable on the Internet, the material in TULSA represents technical literature of lasting value, gathered from worldwide sources. TULS covers from 1965 to the present and is updated weekly; TUSL contains the latest 10 years and is updated quarterly.

Access to TUSL, TULS and TVOC is restricted to licensed Petroleum Abstracts subscribers. For more information on becoming a subscriber, contact your account representative or the Knowledge Center.

TULSA is also available on Dialog (File 87, 986, 987). Consult the Bluesheet for details.

2007 Global Energy Survey

documentationAs pressures build on the global energy industry, leading companies are looking for ways to cooperate. The World Energy Council (WEC) surveyed 50 executives from the world's top energy companies. The resulting report (“Tackling the Three S’s: Sustainability, Security and Strategy”) is designed to stimulate informed debate about challenges facing energy companies. The report highlights areas of controversy and opportunity and indicates that companies need to find "connected solutions."

Read the entire survey for insight into this topic affecting both the energy industry and environmentalists.
