Find Engineering Information in SciSearch
Use
the Subfile field to limit to engineering disciplines
in SciSearch®: A Cited Reference Science
Database(Files 34, 434/SCIN). For example, S SF=ENGINEERING
OR SF=APPLIED; then apply terms of interest limited
to the title (/TI), descriptor (/DE) and identifier
(/ID) fields.

Codes and Terms: Subject Access in
Ei Compendex®
You
are probably already familiar with searching using
controlled vocabulary descriptors or subject terms
in Ei Compendex (File 8/COMP). Have you tried using
subject codes?
The CAL classification codes, used since 1970, comprise
a numeric scheme that organizes the database contents
into 175 broad subject areas. Each document may be
assigned one to six classification codes. The number
of codes assigned depends on the content of the article.
CAL classification codes have three-digit numbers,
but are "cascaded" to the two-digit level.
What this means is that you can search on a group
of related subject areas with a single code. For
example on Dialog, SELECT CC=71 [71.cc. on DataStar]
retrieves all documents indexed with codes from 71
(Electronics and Communications) to 718.3 (Facsimile
Systems and Equipment). This technique ensures comprehensive
retrieval of a topic which may have a number of dissimilar
subject headings.

Telecommunications in Gale Group Business Databases
Gale
Group PROMT® (File 16/PTSP) and Trade & Industry
Database (File 148/INDY) encompass fulltext
trade publications in virtually every industry from
around the world. All telecommunications
articles are indexed with Industry Name (Dialog in=telecommunications /
DataStar telecommunications.in. and
product names (Dialog PN= / DataStar .PN.).
Product names may be very broad (satellite
communications) or very specific (home
banking service). Newer product names (e.g., VoIP) may
not yet appear in the product name index, but can
be searched as a descriptor (Dialog /DE /
DataStar .DE.). Even better, indexing
for key business topics (Event Names)
enable you to retrieve stories that discuss your
topic in a particular way. Examples of Event Names
include: Forecasts Trends Outlooks, Contracts & Orders
Received, and Market Share.
Consult the Dialog Bluesheet or DataStar Datasheet
for more details.

Specialty CSA Files Enhance Engineering Collection
on Dialog
New specialty engineering files from CSA complement the existing broad content for engineering research already available on Dialog. New files include:
- ANTE:
Abstracts in New Technologies and
Engineering (File 60)
- BioEngineering
Abstracts (File 136)
- Civil
Engineering Abstracts (File 61)
- Earthquake
Engineering Abstracts (File 134)
- Environmental
Engineering Abstracts (File 64)
- Mechanical & Transportation
Engineering Abstracts (File 14)
Each
database has deep coverage of the subject and is
focused from the point of view of professional
societies (e.g., IEEE and American Engineering
Association (AEA)) who are important to the literature
of the subject area. Moreover, each record
is reviewed and indexed by an editor knowledgeable
in the field. For information on each CSA
file, click
here.
Special Alert Pricing for CSA Technology Research Database
CSA
Technology Research Database (File 23)
is now available via Alert subscription. Each
subscription includes Alert profile(s) and
up to 100 Alert prints with each scheduled Alert
sent via e-mail. This special
Alert offer for CSA Technology Research Database
gives those who don’t
want a subscription to the file a means by which
they can receive the valued CSA content in File
23. Consult the Bluesheet for more details.
A Century of Engineering Indexed:
Inspec® Now Back
to 1898
As library space becomes a premium, print copies of early abstracts journals are becoming scarce. To overcome this, Inspec digitized the entire collection of Science Abstracts Journals (back to volume one) dating from 1898 to 1968.
An archival backfile has been produced containing:
- The
original value-added indexing and classifications
- Enhancements
in the form of the nearest equivalent current
Inspec Thesaurus
- Terms
and Inspec Classification Codes
- Conference
proceedings, books, journals, reports and dissertations
- Longer
abstracts than today varying in length from half
a page to several pages including diagrams and
complex mathematical proof because hard copy
originals were less accessible
Dialog Implementation
On Dialog, the Archive has been loaded into a separate file—File 202. The Archive is available either on a purchase basis (i.e., ownership in perpetuity), on a site-license basis or transactionally. Transactional pricing is listed on the Bluesheet; for purchase or site-license pricing contact your account manager. To accommodate the addition of the Archive and to make searching for customers as easy as possible, the following changes have been made to the current file numbers:
- File
2: now covers all data from 1898 to date (previously
covered data from 1969 to date)
- File
3: 1969 to date (previously covered the time period
1969 to 1982 which has been discontinued)
- File
4: 1983 to date (no change)
- File
202: 1898 to 1968
Focus
on Telecommunications
Whether you need information on the latest business
issues affecting the telecommunications industry
worldwide or your focus is on the technology, Dialog
has the sources you need. You can search for new
products, trends, forecasts, market research, industry
and regulatory news, and more.
Consider
individual databases, such as those enumerated
below, or scan all relevant databases using Dialog
OneSearch® Categories (TELEBUS, TELECOM, ELECTRON
or COMPSCI) or DataStar CROS Group (File 78 – Computer
Science & Telecommunications). Many business
databases cover a broad array of industry-specific
sources, including telecommunications. Fortunately,
special indexing is available to help you pinpoint
stories targeted to your specific telecom interest.
See the sidebar Search Techniques for ideas.
Key databases covering the Telecommunications industry
include:
- ESPICOM Telecommunications/Power Reports (File
512/ETCO) covers approximately 240 major telecommunications
companies worldwide. In addition, the latest market
data on telecom for 50 countries, including background,
regulations, major operators and networks, and import/export
data, is also available.
- Dialog
Telecommunications Newsletters (File
696) is a collection of fulltext newsletters including Electronic
Commerce News, Cable & Satellite
Europe, Satellite Trader and
many more, covers companies, products, markets, rulings
and regulations, and technologies.
Industry
news databases, such as Dialog
Global Reporter (File 20/REPO), Dialog
NewsRoom (File 990/NEWS), Gale Group
PROMT® (File 16/PTSP) and Trade & Industry (File
148/INDY) should not be overlooked as these databases
offer extensive coverage of the Telecommunications
industry (see Search
Techniques).
For telecommunications technology topics, core
engineering databases such as Inspec® (File
4/INSP) and Ei
Compendex® (File 8/COMP) are
obvious choices. New CSA databases have greatly
expanded telecommunications-technology coverage
on Dialog: Electronics
and Communications Abstracts (File
57), ANTE:
Abstracts in New Technologies and Engineering (File
60), Computer
and Information Systems Abstracts (File
56), CSA
Aerospace & High
Technology Database* (File 108), CSA
Technology Research Database* (File
23), and Solid
State and Superconductivity Abstracts (File
68). Click the database title for more details.

Issue: Technology Accessibility
An important issue facing many businesses is how to make their technology accessible. Emerging regulation requires or encourages technological products and services to be accessible to people with disabilities. The Information and Communications Technology and Consumer Electronics Industry in Europe (EICTA), composed of 54 major multinational companies and 35 national associations from 26 European countries, has written a White paper on their ideas for this type of regulation. Their emphasis is on globally “harmonized” regulations with consistent expectations and objectives. Read the White Paper at http://www.eicta.org/fileadmin/user_upload/document/document1166614008.pdf.
