Classification Codes and Headings in Compendex

The CAL classification codes comprise a numeric classification scheme that segments the literature in Ei Compendex (File 8/COMP) into broad technical subject areas. The scheme consists of over 175 technical disciplines. A primary heading is assigned to each document to reflect its main subject emphasis. Up to five additional headings or subheading combinations can also be assigned. For example,

--SELECT CC=66 retrieves all codes from 661 to 664, the codes for Automotive Engineering:
?s cc=66

--Add descriptor and identifier terms to broaden a search:
?s cc=503 or coal()(mine? ? or mining)/de,id

--Use the (S) connector to ensure terms are in the same subfield:
?s cc=(acoustical(s) instruments)

--EXPAND CC= to see a list of narrower codes or EXPAND a Section Heading:
?e cc=66 (Automotive Engineering)
?e cc=mechanical

Tip for Viewing Market Research Information

Market research reports can be hundreds of pages so it's a good idea to view the table of contents to identify exactly the pages of the report that meet your needs. Using Dialog's Report Titles feature (e.g., report S#/titles), you can review a table of contents:

?report s1/titles

Then following a menu, you can type the section or page number(s) of the report.

Focus on the news you want... Dialog e-Newsletters

Dear Colleague

Ron RodriquesIn the last issue of Engineering & High Tech News, you learned how to retrieve NTIS technical reports and search the Inspec backfile. Now Dialog has added engineering information back to 1884 in Ei Compendex®. This addition, along with Inspec®, NTIS, CSA Technology Research Database (TRD), SciSearch®, PASCAL, and other engineering specialty databases, make Dialog an all encompassing resource for engineering professionals.

Read about new databases, such as TULSA (Petroleum Abstracts), precise indexing using classification codes in Compendex and search features like Report Titles for market analysis. With its extensive content to complement the engineering resources and precise search tools, Dialog becomes your number one source of engineering and other technical information.

Ei Compendex® Adds Coverage Back to 1884

WelderEi Compendex (File 8) has become even more valuable for engineering research across the globe. With the addition of 1.7 million records back to 1884, you can now find information about virtually every major engineering innovation.

Three files let you select the exact data you want to search. You can search the entire database from 1884 to the present in File 8, just the backfile (File 988), covering from 1884 to 1969, or use File 288 to search from 1990 to the present. Compendex is an indispensable resource for engineering research.

SciTech Data Expanded on DataStar with the Addition of TULSA (Petroleum Abstracts)

North-South-East-WestTULSA (Petroleum Abstracts) (TULS, TUSL), the world's leading source of published information on oil and gas exploration, production, transport and storage, is now available on DataStar. Petroleum Abstracts contains full bibliographic citations, abstracts and indexing of scientific articles, patents, meeting papers and government reports of interest to geologists, geophysicists, petroleum engineers and other professionals in the oil and gas exploration and production industry.

Information in TULSA comes from 300 journals and more than 200 conference proceedings, plus patent gazettes and fulltext patents, government documents and reports, dissertations, books, maps and many other sources. In addition, TVOC Vocabulary file (TVOC) is an invaluable resource in searching the file as it gives you access to the controlled descriptor terms used in TULSA.

Unavailable on the Internet, the material in TULSA represents technical literature of lasting value, gathered from worldwide sources. TULS covers from 1965 to the present and is updated weekly; TUSL contains the latest 10 years and is updated quarterly.

Access to TUSL, TULS and TVOC is restricted to licensed Petroleum Abstracts subscribers. For more information on becoming a subscriber, contact your account representative or the Knowledge Center.

TULSA is also available on Dialog (File 87, 986, 987). Consult the Bluesheet for details.

CLAIMS Databases Reloaded with IPC/8 Classification Codes

BugNameThe annual reload of CLAIMS®/ U.S. Patents (File 340), CLAIMS®/Uniterm (File 341) and CLAIMS®/Comprehensive (File 942) has now been completed and includes IPC/8 classification data.

Other enhancements include assignee standardization and improved chemical segmentation.

Dramatic Discoveries in Engineering Archives

BugNameThe last few years have seen the introduction of extended historical coverage of electronic resources, such as bibliographic databases and fulltext archives. The addition of data in Ei Compendex (File 8) back to 1884 and in Inspec® (File 2/INZZ) to 1898 has increased access to historic engineering research and news. Essentially, if researchers have easy access to an historical archive, they will use it.

Benefits of Historic Information

What are the benefits and impact of having access to older information? Here are a few:

  • Locate relevant articles missed through a topic or subject search
  • Uncover the seminal research of an important theory or concept
  • Discover who is citing your research and the impact your work is having on the global research community
  • Measure the influence of colleagues' or competitors' work
  • Determine if a theory has been confirmed, changed or improved
  • Track a topic through years of research literature
  • Find out how a basic concept is being applied

Enhanced accessibility to databases containing citations to older sources has improved the awareness of historic material, as well as the ability to cite it. Will increased availability of historic information impact current research? That is the question yet to be answered.

Focus on Biometrics: Part 2

BugNameIn the June issue of Engineering & High Tech News, we discussed the importance of biometrics and identified particular Dialog and DataStar technical databases related to R&D, as well as industry and news sources. In this issue we focus on Biometrics sources for Market Analysis.

Market Analysis

Where can I find an overview of the biometrics market? What about investment and growth analysis, or profitability of the industry? What is the state of the industry in Europe? Frost & Sullivan Market Engineering (File 767/FSER) offers reports to answer these questions and more. For example, “North American Biometrics Markets – Investments Analysis and Growth,” February 2006, provides a broad financial outline of the current European biometrics market by highlighting the major market and financial trends in key growth segments. It includes a market overview, year-over-year sales growth and industry profitability based on expenses to sales and net profit margin, as well as trends in areas such as facial and iris recognition, fingerprint identification and signature verification. You can also retrieve other 2006 reports including “Internet Security,” “World Airport Perimeter Security Markets” or “Patient Monitoring” in the MARKETFULL category, that offers databases with hundreds of market research reports.

Dialog is the one-stop shop for all of your information from R&D to analysis of the biometrics market.
