Using
Manual Codes
in DWPI
To
use a code in your search, EXPAND or
SELECT MC= <code or codes>.
For example:
?select MC=(Q14-C02 or Q18-B01A)
The full list of transportation Manual Codes is available online.
IPCR/8 Attributes
Each
IPCR/8 classification code assigned to a patent
is also accompanied by a series of "Attributes." Attributes
indicate such data as: Assigning Office, Date,
Classification Level, Position in the list of assigned
class codes, whether "Inventive" or "Non-inventive",
etc. While classification code(s) are searched
with the IC= prefix (or ICA= or ICC= where available),
Attributes are searched using the IA= prefix.
Attributes can be linked to any of the IPCR/8 classification
code fields with the (S) operator and quotes around
the classification code.
To find patents with a specific code assigned as Inventive, use the Attributes code IA=I. In this example, we search for patents assigned IPCR/8 code A61K 31/198 with the Attribute "Inventive" (IA=I). Note the code is converted to the standard format used by Dialog for IPCR/8 codes and enclosed in quotes because the code contains punctuation marks:
?S IC="A61K-0031/198" (S) IA=I
Consult the Dialog IPCR/8 Attributes page for a complete list of Attribute codes and additional examples.

Dear
Colleague
As a result of your suggestions, we have combined the
current Patents News and Trademark
News into this one
newsletter entitled Dialog Intellectual
Property News.
This new, broader focus will allow you to keep up to
date with all Dialog intellectual property resources
through one, comprehensive publication. For example,
in this issue we continue to bring you updates about
the International Patent Classification Reform and
the Mexican trademark database, as well as a case study
about using the Dialog Intranet Toolkit for patent
searching and other industry news that you should find
of interest.

EPO and WIPO/PCT Patents Fulltext Databases Reloaded with New IPCR/8 Data
European
Patents Fulltext (File 348) and WIPO/PCT
Patents Fulltext(File 349) have been updated
with 2006 data. Patents issued since January now include
classification codes based on the new version (8th)
of International Patent Classification (IPCR/8). New
IPCR/8 codes are included in the IC= index of these
databases along with any prior version 7 IPC codes.
To
accommodate search and display of the IPCR/8
classification codes, new fields have been
added to both EPO and WIPO patents. ICA=
includes only IPCR/8 "Advanced" codes
assigned to a patent; ICC=, if present, includes
only "Core" codes (see the Dialog
IPC Web page for definitions
of Advanced and Core). In addition, a new
prefix, IA= (for "Attributes" of
a classification) has been added, allowing
searches on patents assigned codes with specific
Attributes using the (S) operator with
the IC=, ICA= and ICC= terms. For a complete
list of Attribute codes, consult
the table online.
Look for more articles about changes to other patent files on Dialog in future newsletters.
Manual Coding Now Applied to Transportation Patents in DWPI
Patent
searchers will be interested to know that a new manual
code hierarchy has been developed for Transportation
(Class Q) in Derwent World Patents Index® (DWPI®).
Manual codes are the hierarchical classification and
indexing system used as an online retrieval tool for
patents included in Derwent World
Patents Index (File
350, 351, 352).
The new codes cover all areas of transportation, including automotive, aerospace, railway, and shipping technologies, and are consistently applied to relevant patents from all of the countries currently covered in DWPI. The addition of Q Class manual coding will improve recall and precision, and should also enhance any subsequent data analysis.
Examples of the new codes are:
- Q14-C02 — Inflatable occupant restraints (e.g. airbags, knee bolsters, side/curtain airbags)
- Q18-B01A — Hand wheels; steering wheels
- Q24-A01N — Ballasting; Self-bailing equipment; Scuppers
- Q25-C05H — Influencing air flow over aircraft surfaces
Alerts
Available for TRADEMARKSCAN®–Mexico
You can now set up Alerts in TRADEMARKSCAN®—Mexico (File 668). New records added to the database are the most recent available from the Mexican Trademarks Office.
Added to Dialog in May 2005, File 668 contains more than 500,000 trademark registrations from 1976 to the present, with additional information available on published registrations from 1993 forward. The database is similar in design to other trademark files and can be searched individually or using OneSearch® categories.
For help in establishing an Alert, contact the Dialog Alerts Bureau online or at 1 800 334 2564 (North America); 00 800 3 334 2564 (Outside North America).
