What's New in MeSH®: Qualifier Changes for 2007 MeSH

The National Library of Medicine has undertaken a review of existing topical qualifiers within the MeSH® vocabulary. The proposed changes retain familiar broad groups, and terms from the existing qualifiers will be retained. The goal is to insure that qualifiers met the criteria of Understandability, Reproducibility and Usability (URU).

A background paper outlining the rationale for the proposed changes is available.

ONTAP® DWPI with Enhanced Data (File 280)

In anticipation of the enhanced and expanded Derwent World Patents Index (Files 350,351,352), try searching ONTAP Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI) (File 280), the training version of DWPI. File 280 has been completely updated with patents in the new enhanced format (1985–2006). This "preview" database is available free of DialUnit, Connect Time and Output charges.

Use it to explore the many new features and added data in DWPI. BEGIN 280 while logged on to Dialog. Sample searches are available for you to try. It's your chance to "check it out" for data from 1985–2006.

Finding Summary R&D Pipeline Tables Using IMS Company Profiles

IMS Company Profiles (File 449,984/IPCP) provides R&D Pipeline Summary Tables for various companies. The database covers 110 key pharmaceutical companies worldwide.

Here's how to find the R&D pipeline summary table for Bristol-Myers Squibb on Dialog: EXPAND to find the company name (CO=) and SELECT the section heading (SE=) for R&D pipeline table:

?b 449
?e co=bristol-myers squibb
?s e3
?s se=r&d pipeline table
?s e3
?s s1 and s2
?t s3/9/1

The table contains the compound name, laboratory code, therapeutic class and phase of development for the company's pipeline drugs.

Searching Multiple Drug Pipeline Files Simultaneously Using Chemical Structures

BeekersResearchers who want to save time and ensure the completeness of their chemical structure searches will find a unique feature in DialogLink 5 that meets their needs. Using DialogLink 5, you can conduct a chemical structure search in multiple drug pipeline files simultaneously.

DialogLink 5 Capabilities
Simultaneous chemical searching across multiple drug pipeline files saves you time and money by offering a single, comprehensive search of relevant, drug pipeline databases, making it easier than ever to identify potentially competitive compounds earlier in the development process. This unique capability also minimizes the risk that you will miss a critical piece of information when searching for chemical compounds.

Chemical structure searching features on DialogLink 5 also include substructure highlighting in retrieved records, as well as the ability to edit retrieved structures. It also lets you use any chemical structure drawing software that can create an industry standard MDL MOL file to generate the structure query for a Dialog chemical structure search.

With DialogLink 5, you can set up Alerts by chemical structure in some databases to scan newly added research and automatically pinpoint targeted chemical structures. Dialog Alerts generate automatic e-mail notifications when new content is added that matches your search strategy to provide current awareness of topics you specify.

Find out more about DialogLink 5.

MEDLINE® MeSH® Changes for 2006

emergency roomMEDLINE® (File 154,155/ MEDL, MEZZ) on Dialog and DataStar have been reloaded. MEDLINE is reloaded every year because the National Library of Medicine (NLM) re-indexes relevant documents from the whole database with changed medical terms. For 2006, 993 new Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) were added, 188 headings were replaced with more up-to-date terminology and 50 headings were deleted.

For example, influenza in birds or bird flu is of major concern worldwide. MEDLINE has changed some of its MeSH vocabulary related to this topic for 2006. "Influenza" is now referred to as "Influenza, Humans" and "Influenza, Avian" has been renamed: "Influenza in Birds." Eight new influenza descriptors include:

  • Influenza A Virus, H1N1 Subtype
  • Influenza A Virus, H2N2 Subtype
  • Influenza A Virus, H3N2 Subtype
  • Influenza A Virus, H3N8 Subtype
  • Influenza A Virus, H5N1 Subtype
  • Influenza A Virus, H5N2 Subtype
  • Influenza A Virus, H7N7 Subtype
  • Influenza A Virus, H9N2 Subtype

In addition to being a leading source on textiles, technology and applications as reported in technical, scientific, economic and commercial journals and statistical publications, World Textiles covers subjects such as protective materials, dressings, medical equipment, medical clothing, textiles finishing and washing, etc. World Textiles also includes unique coverage of the related patents and patent applications from the USPTO, European and British patent offices.

Hot Topics from Thomson Scientific

Beeker close upEvery two months, Thomson Scientific specialists identify emerging and fast-moving "Research Fronts"—areas of scientific research that gain particular attention, and "Hot" and "Fast-Breaking Papers"—individual papers that achieve a rate of citation that is markedly higher than papers of comparable type and age.

Thomson Scientific ESI Special Topics Web site is updated with new analyses and information each month—including interviews with noteworthy authors and insight into up-and-coming research trends. One of the latest topics considered is the potential to diagnose Alzheimer's disease. Read the interview of William Klein on the topic of his paper.
