What is DialogWeb?

DialogWeb provides easy access to the full content, power, and precision of Dialog through a Web browser. It has a powerful search engine that accesses thousands of authoritative business, scientific, intellectual property, and technical publications.

Special features include:

  • A flexible and easy to use Guided Search mode that lets the searcher choose focused search forms, without requiring knowledge of the Dialog command language
  • A robust Command Search mode that uses the powerful Dialog command language experienced searchers can easily use
  • Database selection tools to help pinpoint the right database for your search
  • Integrated database descriptions, pricing information, and other search assistance
  • Alert Manager makes it easy to create and modify Alerts (current awareness updates)

Who was DialogWeb designed to serve?

Both novice and experienced online searchers use DialogWeb. There is an easy access mode for novices called Guided Search that provides access to the vast Dialog collection of databases. There's also a Command Search mode that takes advantage of the powerful Dialog search language which trained searchers can use. If you are already supplementing your research by searching on the World Wide Web, DialogWeb offers an easy way to add a quick search to your results, without leaving your Internet browser to launch other software.

New and infrequent DialogWeb searchers can take advantage of hyperlinks to the complete online help system and other features that assist them with filling out search forms or using the Dialog command syntax.


How is DialogWeb different from classic Dialog?

Other than an enhanced graphical Web interface, there are some features unique to DialogWeb, which include:

  • A flexible and easy to use Guided Search mode that does not require knowledge of the Dialog command language
  • A subject hierarchy presentation that helps pinpoint the right databases for your search
  • Integrated database descriptions, pricing information, and other search assistance
  • Easy to use forms to create and modify Alerts (current awareness updates)
  • Search results available in HTML or text formats

There are a few databases not included and some functionality not enabled because of limitations of the Web browsers.


What is Guided Search?

The Guided Search component of DialogWeb provides easy access to the vast collection of Dialog databases. Guided Search has a search interface that's easy to use and does not require you to know the Dialog command language. Guided Search provides a subject hierarchy to help you navigate to the databases that specialize in your research topic. It also allows you to jump directly to databases if you already know where you want to run your search.

There are two types of Guided Search forms: Dynamic Search and Targeted Search.

  1. A Dynamic Search form is generated on-the-fly based on the category or database you have picked. These forms tend to offer many more search options and more databases to choose from compared to Targeted Search forms. In addition, Dynamic Search forms are available for every category and database accessed by DialogWeb. Targeted Search forms are only available for some of the more commonly used categories.

  2. A Targeted Search is a ready-made search form with databases pre-assigned to the form. These forms are offered in frequently used categories to provide quick answers. A search query is formulated for you based on the information you enter on the form.

User friendly presentation of search results, saving search strategies, and a variety of choices for viewing or sending records are also available through Guided Search. Even experienced Dialog searchers can benefit from using Guided Search if they need to search in a database or on a topic they're not familiar with.


What is Command Search?

The Command Search component of DialogWeb provides the full power of the Dialog command language with a user friendly graphical user interface. You are expected to be familiar with Dialog commands when using Command Search.

Additional features include built-in tools such as Bluesheets (database descriptions) and pricing information, database selection assistance to help pinpoint the right databases for your search, and easy to use forms to create and modify Alerts (current awareness updates). Command Search also provides additional help in viewing and sending search results.


What is available for current awareness or automatic updates?

DialogWeb provides two types of current awareness options, Dialog Alerts and Table of Contents Alerts. These options allow you to track topics of interest automatically, without having to log on to Dialog or DialogWeb and conduct a search. Dialog Alerts lets you store a search and have it run automatically when a database is updated. The stored search is run against the new items in the database and the results are sent to you immediately by email, fax, or postal delivery.

Subscriptions to Table of Contents Alerts enable you to receive email messages with a listing of article titles from a desired publication. You order the fulltext article by sending reply email. Are all Dialog databases available on DialogWeb?

Most Dialog databases are available. Exceptions are the following menu systems and gateway files which are not currently enabled for the Web: QUOTES, TRADELINE, CBDMENU, HEADLINES, BANKNEWS, BNADAILY, and TNT. You can BEGIN the regular files for many of these. For example, BEGIN TNT is unavailable, but you can BEGIN 650 to access the regular Tax Notes Today database.

The following newspaper files are also unavailable: File 725, Cleveland Plain Dealer; File 706 New Orleans Times-Picayune; File 704 Portland Oregonian.


What type of training is available?

A broad range of training options to expand your search skills and knowledge are available. Check the Training Center to find an option that fits your needs. Use the DialogWeb tutorial to introduce yourself to the service and review the use of both Guided Search and Command Search.


How much does it cost?

Standard Dialog prices apply to DialogWeb. Prices typically include output and DialUnits (Dialog Interactive Language Units) which represent the usage of system resources necessary to execute search commands, as well as telecommunications charges. At any time during your search session you can click Cost in the navigation bar to see an estimate of your session's cost. Links to database descriptions, including database rates, are available throughout DialogWeb. The picklist page in Guided Search will display the full record price for each record listed. There's also a Show Rates button that displays all of the format choices.

How do I sign-up?

If you already have a Dialog password, you do not have to sign-up for DialogWeb. You can use your existing Dialog password. (Dialog passwords also provide access to DialogSelect our Web interface for novice searchers and to DialogClassic our Internet connection for expert searchers.)

How is DialogWeb different from DialogSelect?

While both products are Web interfaces to classic Dialog, DialogWeb offers many more database, searching, display, and delivery options. DialogWeb provides an easy to use non-command mode interface along with an advanced command driven interface. DialogSelect does not access all of the same databases that DialogWeb provides and is intended for end-users who need answers to frequently asked research questions in specific subject areas.


How do I connect to DialogWeb?

An Internet connection (dialup or direct) is required. The URL is http://www.dialogweb.com/.

The secure site URL is https://www.dialogweb.com/.


What are the system requirements?

The current 2.0 version is optimized to work with Netscape Navigator/Communicator 4.x. Use either Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.02 or higher. Other browsers, and earlier versions of these browsers, are not supported.

You can download a copy of the latest production versions of the Netscape and/or Microsoft browsers from their Web sites. Please be sure to use the production versions, as we cannot guarantee performance on beta software. VGA or SVGA monitors with 256 colors or higher are preferred. Cookies should be accepted. JavaScript must be enabled.


What security policies are in effect to protect private information?

DialogWeb is available at two URLs:

If you are using the "https address", you will NOT need to worry about security. The "s" in this address invokes the SSL (secure socket layer) security protocol. Please be aware that the "http address" does NOT offer a secure Internet connection. While we take as much care as possible to ensure that our data transmissions are secure and confidential, we cannot guarantee security over the Internet other than through the use of a security protocol such as SSL.

Depending upon how your site is configured, your in-house setup may not support SSL. If this is the case at your site, and you are concerned about security, you may want to contact your Systems or MIS department about adding capability for SSL, which is the current standard for secure transactions over the Internet.


How do I print on your Web products? I just tried printing, but instead of my Cost there was a bit of text stating “:Search Window Command line” and the URL for Dialog Web.

Our Web products are frame based so you must activate the frame that contains what you want to print by clicking once with the left mouse button somewhere in the middle section of the web page.

In DialogClassic.com: go to the top of your web browser and click on File/Print Frame (Netscape). Each time you bring up new information, you will need to activate the frame. If you have Internet Explorer as a browser, select all text in the frame, copy, paste into a word processing document.

In DialogWeb.com: you must check the records you wish to print and select Browser for print/save, then display/send and file/print in Guided Mode or Print/Save Selected in Command Mode.


I need to run a search about the impact on profits of a company after a merger or acquisition. What is a quick way for me to figure out which files to search? What are the steps?

What “time” does the Dialog Mainframe use?

System time is Eastern Standard Time.


How can I find the price of alerts?

Type Help Alerts and the system will display all files which allow alerts, the cost, the frequency and whether the first 20 records are free. Also, you can view the Bluesheets.


Can I capture a group of images on DialogWeb?

There is no way to capture records as a group. It must be done one by one, by clicking the right mouse button on each image and providing for the .gif extension.
