Use DIALINDEX® (File 411) to Find a U.S. Company Profile?

TOPIC: One of the best places to begin company research on Dialog is in File 411, DIALINDEX. Searching DIALINDEX, an index to all databases on Dialog, is a fast, inexpensive way to locate databases that contain your search topic. Updated daily, DIALINDEX is a current source of data.

To use DIALINDEX, first choose a subject category. For a basic overview of a U.S. company, use the DIALINDEX/OneSearch® category USCO (U.S. Companies). Most of the databases in this category are directory databases, covering public and private companies. A directory provides an address, business description or Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes, management names, and a few key facts about the company.

In this search, you will learn to use DIALINDEX to locate a database source, and then BEGIN the database to obtain your results. You are looking for a basic company profile for Pep Boys.

HOW TO...

1. BEGIN 411 (DIALINDEX) to scan a group of databases for your topic.

2. In the SET FILES (SF) box enter the category USCO.

3. Enter your company name. Note that CO= requires that the name be entered exactly as in the database. Since you do not know if the name ends in "Inc.," or "Co.", etc., include the truncation symbol (?) to find all endings and click Run Search.

(PEP(W)BOYS/CO is another method of searching the same name.)
