Find Biographical Information on a Director or Officer Using News Sources?

TOPIC: Several databases on Dialog are good sources of biographical information on the directors or officers of companies. Some databases provide only basic biographical data, while others may include extensive biographical articles on specific individuals.

Regional news sources can include biographical information about local directors or officers, and regional newspapers are often the only source of information about regional personalities. The information can range from a few lines in a short article to an extensive article profiling the person's life.

Files you can search for regional news include: Full-text U.S. newspapers (PAPERS), Business Dateline® (File 635) and Dialog NewsRoom (File 990).

COMMAND SUMMARY

BEGIN PAPERS
SELECT (WILLIAM OR BILL?)(2N)GATES AND (BIO? OR INTERVIEW?)/DE

HOW TO...

1. BEGIN in PAPERS, a OneSearch category containing all U.S. full-text newspapers.

2. Use parentheses around ORed terms when using other connectors.

3. Although some newspapers may index GATES and some names in the Descriptor field, this indexing can be inconsistent.

It is best to perform a free-text search on the person's name. Many newspapers have a descriptor (DE) that can be used to retrieve biographical information, but the form of the descriptor can be unique to each newspaper.

It is recommended that a truncated form of the term "biography" be used to include all variations of the term.

Note: For File 990, select bio? or interview?

Note that the SELECT statement can also be written: S (william or bill) (2n) gates and (bio? or interview?)/de
