Find Importers and Exporters of X Product?
TOPIC: PIERS Imports (U.S. Ports) (File 573) and PIERS Exports (U.S. Ports) (File 571) are compilations of manifests of vessels loading and discharging international cargo at more than 130 seaports of the United States and Puerto Rico, and approximately 11 key seaports in PIERS Imports (Latin America) (File 574) or PIERS Exports (Latin America) (File 572). Details on each individual shipment are stored in the databases.
Principal applications include: identification of trade opportunities, monitoring imports and/or exports of products whose details are lost in traditional government reports, and identification of potential trade partners. All waterborne international trade movements are captured: containerized, break bulk, dry bulk, and tanker. There is approximately a two-month lag between vessel arrivals and the loading of the data into the files. The PIERS databases are produced by Commonwealth Business Media, publisher of The Journal of Commerce.
The following search shows how to identify product codes, and then find the companies that imported the products in PIERS Imports (U.S. Ports).
Note: There are two pre-formatted reports available in PIERS: one in PIERS Exports (U.S. or Latin America) (Files 571,572) and one in PIERS Imports (U.S. or Latin America) (Files 573,574). These reports aggregate the shipments of each company retrieved by a search statement and rank the companies by the weight of their total shipments. The company with the greatest total cargo weight appears first. Pre-formatted reports allow analysis of shipping patterns and trends that influence the marketplace.

HOW TO...

1. BEGIN File 573 to search PIERS Imports (U.S. Ports)
2. SELECT terms. Restrict to the Product Shipped (/PS) and the Product Named (/PN) fields. By using a comma, you are “OR”ing the two fields. Use truncation (?) to retrieve all forms of the root word, e.g. telephone or telephones. Note that the terms “telephone?” or “phone?” are “nested” so that Dialog will search for those terms first. The proximity connector (1N) specifies that “cellular” appears near “telephone?” OR “phone?” within one word, in either order.

3. TYPE the first several records in Format 6.
This format shows the date of shipment, the Product Shipped, the Product Name and the Product Code. Use the latter to identify a Product Code (PC=) for your search.
Note: Some records have been omitted from this display. |

|

4. VISUAL EXPAND the Product Code you have identified. Check references pertaining to your product code number and click Select. |

|

5. Combine Sets 1 (S1) and 2 (S2).
6. LIMIT your results to a specific date range. The colon indicates a range.
7. DISPLAY SETS (DS) to review your search strategy. |

|

8. Create a pre-formatted Importer Report with the REPORT command.
9. Enter an optional title for the report.
10. Enter Yes (Y) to accept all 48 importers, or specify how many companies’ shipment details you wish to see.
Note: charges for pre-formatted reports in the PIERS files are based on the number of shipments displayed. Each company could have several shipments. The minimum rate covers the first 100 shipments. Beyond that, there is a charge for each additional shipment.
|

  |
So if, for example, the first company had more than 100 shipments, you would be charged accordingly. You can tell from your set results how many shipments are found in the search. For example, S3 had 111 results (or shipments) of the product.
You can also use the RANK command to check the number of shipments each company imported. The command in Files 573,574 is RANK IM. (In Files 571, 572 it is RANK CO). Enter HELP RATES 573 for pricing details for File 573.
Note: Part of this report is omitted from the display. |
