Find News on a U.S. Company Using DIALINDEX (File 411)?
TOPIC: DIALINDEX®, File 411, is a good place to identify recent company news. DIALINDEX lets you quickly and inexpensively review a group of databases for news on your topic, rather than searching one database at a time. The DIALINDEX category NEWSCO searches company news files on Dialog: all databases in this category contain the Company Name (CO=) field.
In this example, you will use DIALINDEX to identify databases containing your search terms, and then to BEGIN these databases in OneSearch® to retrieve your articles.
COMMAND SUMMARY
BEGIN 411
Enter the OneSearch category NEWSCO in the Set Files box
In the Select box, enter the search MICRON/CO AND (MARKET(5N)(SHARE OR SIZE))/TI,DE,AB
Click Run Search
Click Hits at the top of the column twice
Check boxes next to the databases of interest and click Begin Hits
SElECT S1 AND PY=2006:2008

HOW TO...

1. BEGIN DIALINDEX (File 411).
2. Enter the category you want to search in the Set Files box.
3. Enter your search terms in the Select box and search MICRON using the /CO Company Name field.
Click Run Search.
Note: /CO " is a word-indexed field, meaning you must replace punctuation and connect words with a proximity operator. Using CO= or /CO are two different methods of searching the same data. CO= is used when you are certain of how a name will appear. /CO allows more flexibility because terms can be anywhere in the field.
Note: In DIALINDEX all search terms must be entered in one search statement because no sets are created in DIALINDEX. |

|

4. Click the Hits header twice to rank the files with the most hits at the top of the list.
|

|

5. Check boxes of the databases you want to search. Then click Begin Hits.
|

|
The search automatically displays as Set 1 (S1).
|

|

6. Limit the search to the latest years using a colon for a range.
7. REMOVE DUPLICATES when searching more than one database. |

 |
8. Initially view records in a short, inexpensive format. The K (KWIC) format gives a "window" of text surrounding the search term(s).
9. Click Links next to the record you want > Display > Type Full Record.
When displaying from more than one database, use the FROM EACH command to see one or more from each file.
Note: Enter HELP RATES NNN (NNN is the database number) to check prices.
Note: Some of the records have been omitted from this display. |
 |
10. Display the articles that are relevant in the full format. Format 9 or Full is the complete format for most news databases.
Note: Portions of the record are not shown. |
