Create a List of Manufacturers for a Chemical?

TOPIC: An important task for a business is to find manufacturers for its products. For chemical companies Chapman and Hall Chemical Database (File 303), The Merck Index OnlineSM (File 304) and Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances (File 336) are key files in searching chemical substances. They contain chemical names, properties, identification, details and more. Each record describes a single chemical entity and contains CAS® Registry Numbers, synonyms and other substance information. These files provide excellent ways to capture chemical names and synonyms to execute in Directory of Chemical Producers—Products (File 363).

Then from the chemical products found in File 363, we can use the Directory of Chemical Producers—Companies (File 364) to create lists of specific chemical producers and their locations throughout the world. The two databases (Files 363 and 364) connect chemical products with their international manufacturers, thus, giving us the advantage of full multi-region searchability. The Dialog collection consists of nine regional directories covering approximately 13,000 companies worldwide that operate almost 18,000 plants. Coverage includes more than 90 countries in the following regional designations: Canada, China, East Asia, Europe, India, Mexico, Middle East and Africa, South and Central America and the United States.

In this example we'll:

1. Identify the synonyms for a chemical and the chemical's CAS® Registry Number (RN=) using Files 303, 304 and 336. The MAP command will create a temporary SearchSave that can then be executed in files which may either use the CAS Registry Number or free-text searching, or both.

2. Search the Directory of Chemical Producers—Products (File 363) and create a SearchSave containing company names corresponding to the names indexed in the Directory of Chemical Producers—Companies (File 364).

3. Find companies that produce a chemical (File 364) and create a list that identifies the companies and their locations.

                            --- SET Command ---

The SET command has a variety of uses, most of which alter the
form of output that DIALOG sends to your terminal. Any time the
SET command is used, a parameter is set that remains in effect
until LOGOFF, or until you issue another SET command that
modifies the parameter. Use the SHOW command to display the
parameters that are currently set.

You can enter a SET command at any point in your search.
You can also store SET commands in your PROFILE; for details on
use of the PROFILE feature, refer to HELP EDIT, HELP SAVE, OR
HELP PROFILE online.

A list of available SET commands is provided below:
