Find Databases That Have Specific Journals and Who Is Publishing Most in That Journal in a Particular Database?

TOPIC: If you select the proper database, you can search quickly and inexpensively on Dialog. The Dialog Journal Name Finder™ (File 414) helps researchers determine if a database has the journal they are looking for. Another helpful feature on Dialog is the RANK command which lets you perform trend or statistical analysis on an existing search set. The Dialog system extracts terms from the specified field using a two-letter prefix (e.g., AU for author) in a set of records and lists them in ranked order, with the most highly posted term appearing first.

For this search we'll use the Journal Name Finder to look for databases that contain records for the journal Nature Nanotechnology and use RANK to find out which authors are publishing most in this journal in a particular database.

COMMAND SUMMARY

BEGIN 414
VISUAL EXPAND JN=NATURE NANO

Check the journal(s) you want to search and click Select
REPORT S1/JOURNAL
Select the item number(s) for the journal
RANK AU

HOW TO...

1. BEGIN File 414, Dialog Journal Name Finder.

2. VISUAL EXPAND using the prefix JN= for journal name and a form of the name that lets you see the beginning of the listing for nanotechnology.

3. Check the journal you want to search and click Select.

Note the different spellings of the name in the list of journals.

A set (S1) is automatically created from the entries checked in the Visual Expand list.

4. Use the REPORT S#/JOURNAL to see a tabular display of journal titles, file numbers, type of databases and number of records.

Note: You can also SORT the records in S1 by record count (RC) to have the file with the highest record count appear first on the list in descending order (e.g., SORT S1/ALL/RC,D).

5. Type the item number(s) of the database(s) you want to search, in this example File 2, Inspec for its engineering content.

Notice the different spellings of the journal name even in the same database.

6. Type Yes to save the items in a SearchSave and BEGIN the database(s).

The SearchSave is automatically run in the database you selected (File 2).

Note: At this point you can limit the search using additional keywords.

7. Now use the RANK command to see what author(s) (AU) is publishing most in this journal.

Note: You can also use VISUAL EXPAND as we did for the journal in Step 1 above.
