Find Definitions for Buzz Words?

TOPIC: In the scientific and technical fields buzz words or acronyms are used quite frequently. For instance, what does QFD mean? In a comprehensive search all synonyms should be searched so we must find the meaning for the acronym.

In this example, we can use the "Which Hunt" technique to find out what the buzz word means. This involves searching a full-text database, preferably of general interest, and looking for articles in which the acronym is used and is followed by the word "which" as in "QFD, which is also known as…." We can search in a general industry database such as Gale Group Trade & Industry Database™ (File 148) or Gale Group Promt® (File 16).

1. BEGIN in File 148, Gale Group Trade & Industry Database, a general business database. 2. SELECT the buzz word acronym. 3. SELECT the buzz word, followed by the word "which," as in the clause: ...which is defined as...
4. TYPE a a record or so to get the definition for the buzz word. Use Format K to see the keywords in the context of the article. Note: Some records have been omitted from this display.
5. SELECT Set 1 (S1) containing the buzz word and its definition using the OR connector.
6. TYPE the set using Formats 8 to see descriptors and K to view keywords in the context of the article.
