Find A Conference in a Specific Place and Time?

TOPIC: Occasionally you need to find a conference in a particular location during a certain year. In the biomedical literature Inside Conferences (File 65) and BIOSIS Previews® (File 55) provide specific fields to use to find conference titles, locations and dates. Conference Location (CL=) includes cities, states, provinces and countries. Conference Year (CY=) allows you to pinpoint the year of the conference.

In this example, you will search BIOSIS using precise steps to find a conference held by the European Sleep Research Society in Innsbruck, Austria, on September 12-16, 2006. You will see an estimate of how many papers were presented, and you will TYPE a list of presentation titles using Format 6.

In Inside Conferences you can use the same strategy. Additional files in the scientific literature with Conference Location, Conference Year and Conference Title fields include PASCAL (File 144), PsycINFO® (File 11), AGRICOLA (File 10), Inspec® (File 2) and Ei Compendex® (File 8). Files robust in providing individual proceedings titles include BIOSIS, Inspec and Ei Compendex.

COMMAND SUMMARY

BEGIN 55
SELECT CT=(CONGRESS(S)EUROPEAN(W)SLEEP(W)RESEARCH)
EXPAND CL=INNSBRUCK
SELECT E3
SELECT S1 AND S2
SELECT S3 AND CY=2006
TYPE S4/3/1
TYPE S4/6/1-703

HOW TO...

1. BEGIN File 55 to search BIOSIS for a conference.

2. SELECT the Conference Title (CT=). Note that the CT= field is word indexed, which means that you need to use proximity connectors and enclose your terms with parentheses following CT=.

The proximity connector (S) looks for words in the same paragraph or subfield. The proximity connector (W) specifies the second term must follow the first term.

3. Visual Expand the city of choice in the Conference Location (CL=) field to confirm indexing of the city, state or country name. The CL= field is word indexed (e.g. SELECT CL=(LAS(W)VEGAS)).

4. Check the appropriate term for the city you wish to search and click Select.

5. SELECT Set 1 (S1) and Set 2 (S2) to combine the conference results with the location.
