Find a U.S. Patent Using an Application Number?
TOPIC: In this example, you will find a patent in U.S. Patents Fulltext (File 654) using the U.S. application number 08/635776 filed April 22, 1996.
A U.S. application number consists of a two-digit series designation which corresponds to a range of filing years (i.e. series 08/ was used for filing years 1993 through 1997), plus a six-digit serial number (635776).

Tip: When SELECTing, you can qualify with the /PR suffix (e.g., s an=us 400798/pr) to limit your search to Priority Application Numbers, the first application filed for the invention.
HOW TO...

1. After entering BEGIN 654 to open U.S. Patents Fulltext for searching, EXPAND on the application number prefix (AN=), the country code (US) and the serial number (635776).
2. Look for the year of filing after the serial number in the EXPAND list (i.e. US 635776-1996).
3. SELECT the appropriate E number(s).
Note: The series designation indicates the range of years in which the application was filed. If you do not know the year of filing, the following conversion chart will be helful in estimating the approximate year of filing:

07/ 1987-1992
08/ 1993-1997
09/ 1998-2001
10/ 2002-2004
11/ 2005-present

4. TYPE out a record in MEDIUM format to see the title, inventor, patent assignee, patent and application numbers, and dates of issue.
Optional step: Include the display code (IM) to see the image as well:
