"How Do I...?" - Patents

Find Competitors Who Are Working in the Same Area of Technology By Searching Patent Citations?

TOPIC: Looking at the patents your competitor is citing is a good way to find out about new products your competitor is developing. In this example, you will find who Genentech’s U.S. competition is by identifying who is citing Genentech’s U.S. patents in the last few years. You will use U.S. Patents Fulltext (File 654) containing fulltext U.S. patents.

You will use the MAP command to collect all Genentech’s U.S. patent numbers and then RANK the results by patent assignee to see who has cited those patents most often. The MAP command enables you to look at a number of patents quickly without typing in all of the cited numbers. The RANK command lists the patent assignees from the set in order with highest number of patents at the top of the list.
