Find Prior Art for a Specific Technology?
TOPIC: In this example you are conducting a prior art search for a specific technology by searching for patents where dry ice is used to clean grafitti using the "building block" approach. Combine synonyms with the OR operator. The "ORed" sets can be combined with different sets easily as the search progresses. The synonym sets can be combined with AND or closer proximity operators, (e.g.: (5n)).
Use Derwent World Patents Index (File 351) to see descriptive titles and abstracts.

1. BEGIN 351, Derwent
World Patents Index, containing descriptive titles of patents.
2. SELECT as many synonyms as possible and combine them using the OR operator.
Hint: Use internal truncation to retrieve different letters within a word.

3. Combine sets using the AND operator.
4. TYPE out a few records using Format 6 to view more keywords.

5. Recombine sets using the proximity connector (5n) to have terms within five words of each other in either order.
6. TYPE the resulting set using the user-defined format TI to see the descriptive titles.
