Find Cited Patents in Derwent Patents Citation Index?

TOPIC: In this example, we want to find out what patents and technical documents were cited as prior art by European patent (EP 285906).We also want to see what companies, if any, are citing this patent.

We will conduct the search in Derwent Patents Citation Index (File 342). Derwent Patents Citation Index contains patent and literature citations for over one million patent families drawn from six patenting authorities: the European Patent Office (EP); Germany (DE); Japan (JP), chemical and electrical examined patents only; Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT/WO); the United Kingdom (GB); and the United States (US).

1. After entering BEGIN 342 to open Derwent Patents Citation Index for searching, search for the patent number (PN=). SELECT using the patent number prefix (PN=) the country code (EP) and the patent number (285906). TYPE the record in Format 9 to see all cited and citing references.
2. Review the record to see the patent family, cited patents, cited literature references and citing patents.     Patent Family with EP 285906.
Cited patents are those patents cited as prior art for EP 285906.           No cited literature references, those journal articles cited as prior art for EP 285906. However, there are references for its U.S. family member.
Citing patents are those patents that are using EP 285906 as prior art. You can also see the Assignee/Inventors that are citing this patent. Note that BASF AG is citing its own patent.
