Locate Plant Patents?

TOPIC: In this example you will be searching for the patent number for a new type of rose plant in the CLAIMS database. Plant patents do not conform to the same 7-digit number beginning with 5, 6, or 7. You will enter the U.S. country code, a space, and the letters PP, followed by a five-digit number (fill with leading zeroes, if needed).

Note: In INPADOC, enter the U.S. country code a space, and the letters PP, followed by a four or five-digit number (no leading zeroes).

U.S. plant patents can be found in CLAIMS®/US Patents (File 340, 341, 942), U.S. Patents Fulltext (Files 654) and INPADOC (File 345).

To search for all plant patents use the following strategies:

  • In Claims/U.S. Patents and U.S. Patents Fulltext, use the document type (DT=): DT=PLANT.
  • In INPADOC search the Patent Country field (PC=) and enter the U.S. country code, followed by a space and the kind code P truncated with the question mark (?) (e.g., S PC=US P?).
