Use Dialog Online Help Tools to Find Country and Kind Codes in Files 345 and 351?

TOPIC: A COUNTRY code is a two-digit designation for a particular country. A KIND code designates the level of publication of a document (e.g., an unexamined application versus a published patent). This “How Do I…?” gives an overview of how to interpret the country and kind codes found in INPADOC/Family and Legal Status (File 345), and the Derwent World Patents Index® (Files 351, 350, 352 in Japan only).

A short description shows how to find the appropriate lists of these codes online on Dialog. We recommend that users make a copy of the kind and country codes for convenient reference.

NOTE: The two-letter WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) (WO) country codes and the one- or two-character patent codes are regulated by ISO (International Organization for Standards) and WIPO committees. Changes in kind codes are common, and interpreting the kind codes often requires extensive knowledge of the patent laws of the country concerned. The WIPO Handbook on Industrial Property Information and Documentation, published by WIPO, may be useful (order at http://www.wipo.org/ebookshop?lang=eng).

This search shows the use one of Dialog’s free files, the Dialog Community-of-Interest Newsletters (File 410) to perform the online Help commands. Searchers can use any Dialog database, including another free file, the Dialog Bluesheets (File 415) to execute these commands.
