Find a Japanese Patent?
TOPIC: In this example, you will obtain a Japanese patent using the Kokai Japanese patent number 05-185241. Note that the “5” in the Kokai number stands for the Imperial Year, plus the six-digit publication number. Databases with Japanese patents include Derwent World Patents Index® (File 351, 352), JAPIO, (File 347) and INPADOC (File 345).
Different numbers are assigned to stages of the patent process in Japan.
- The Western Year is assigned to the Application number, Unexamined published/“laid open” application number (Kokai), Examined published application number (Kokoku), Granted patent number (Toroku), Utility model application and Utility model patent.
- The Japanese numbering system for the most part uses an annual series so each year begins with document number 1.
- The year of the Emperor (Imperial Year) also makes a difference in the number used. The Imperial Year is used for Unexamined Published Applications (Kokai); the Western Year is used for applications

1. After entering BEGIN 351 to open Derwent World Patents Index for searching, EXPAND on the patent number (PN=), using the country code (JP) and Imperial Year.
Tip: To find an application number, convert the Imperial Year to the Western Year.
–Hirohito’s reign lasted 63 years (1926-1989) so to convert Emperor year + 25 = Western year (e.g., 61 + 25 = 1986).
–Akihito’s reign began in 1989 so to convert Emperor year + 88 =
Western year (e.g., 2 + 88 = 1990).
