Find Sales of Brand-Name Drugs in the Trade Literature?

TOPIC: Often companies need to locate data on sales of specific brand-name drugs. Dialog contains a wealth of sources for finding sales information on pharmaceutical products. These sources include business trade literature, company reports, country reports, analysts’ reports, and market research reports.

Many of these sources contain tabular data. Tablebase (File 93) is the first stop. Key trade literature databases with excellent indexing and special features include Business & Industry (File 9) and Gale Group PROMT® (File 16). Fulltext market research reports, with in-depth, expert analysis, include Business Insights (File 759), Datamonitor Market Research (File 761) and BCC Market Research (File 764), in the Market Research Reports OneSearch category. See How Do I Find Drug Sales Data in Fulltext Market Research Reports?

This example shows how to search for sales of Lipitor in TableBase and in the trade literature databases (Files 93, 9 and 16).

COMMAND SUMMARY

BEGIN 93
SELECT LIPITOR AND SALES/DE
SELECT S1/2006:2008
TYPE S2/8/1-4
Click Links > Display > Type Full Record

Note: Use the same strategy to search Business & Industry (File 9). In File 9 you can restrict retrieval further to records with tables and rankings (e.g., S S2 AND (SF=TABLE OR DT=RANKING)).

In Gale Group Promt (File 16) you can use the Event Code (EC=) to restrict to sales (EC=650). You can also LIMIT retrieval to articles about business in the United States (/USA).

HOW TO...

1. BEGIN File 93 to search TableBase, a database consisting of statistical tables with the originating article when available.

2. SELECT a brand name drug and combine it with the term sales on the Descriptor field (/DE).

3. Restrict retrieval to articles published within the last two years. The colon (:) acts as OR.

4. TYPE a few records in Format 8, which gives Title, Indexing, Source and Publication Date.

To select the appropriate record number, look at the range of records in the TYPE command (e.g., 2/8/2).

5. Click Links next to the record you want > Display > Type Full Record.
