Dialog "How Do I...?" - Pharmaceuticals & Health Devices

Find and Track Companies that are Working on Drugs for a Particular Type of Indication?

TOPIC: In this example, you will set up a Dialog Alert to monitor companies who are developing drugs for inflammatory indications. A Dialog Alert is a current awareness service that allows a search to run automatically whenever new records are added to the database(s).

Two databases useful for this search are IMS R&D Focus (File 445) and Pharmaprojects (File 128)*. IMS R&D Focus contains two types of records: R&D Focus (Drug Profile records) and R&D Drug News (Drug News records). Information provided includes: full synonyms, licensing status, patent summary, development history, commercial potential, company activity, scientific and commercial summaries and abstracts of significant scientific papers. Pharmaprojects reports on the progress of new pharmaceutical products, both new chemical and biotechnological entities, at all stages of development.

You will also use the RANK command in this search to find companies that are in a particular therapeutic class. The RANK command extracts terms from a specified field in a set of records and lists them in ranked order, with the most highly posted term appearing first.

HOW TO...

1. BEGIN File 445, IMS R&D Focus.

2. SELECT keywords to include any status a drug might be in.

3. SELECT the therapeutic class code for immuno-suppressive agents (L4A) and narrow the search to the most recent years.

Note that the therapeutic class code contains truncation to retrieve all narrower classes.

From the displayed list of companies, type the numbers of the ones that you want to track, in this example the top 5.
