Find Interactions for a Particular Drug?

TOPIC: There are several databases that can be used to find information on drug interactions in the biomedical literature. MEDLINE® (File 154), EMBASE® (File72), BIOSIS Previews®, (File 55) and SciSearch®: A Cited Reference Database (File 34) all contain records related to drug interactions.

In this example, you will search all four databases using specific techniques for each file to find if there are any drug interactions related to the drug Remicade.

COMMAND SUMMARY

BEGIN 154,72,55,34
SELECT (REMICADE OR INFLIXIMAB)(L) IT FROM 72
SELECT (REMICADE OR INFLIXIMAB) AND DRUG()INTERACT?/TI,DE,ID FROM 154,55,34
SELECT S1 OR S2
RD
TYPE S4/6/1-2 FROM EACH
TYPE S4/9/14

HOW TO...

1. BEGIN Files 154,72,55,34 to search major biomedical files.

2. SELECT the drug name(s). Use the (L) connector to search the drug name with Drug Interactions (IT) in EMBASE (File 72). The FROM command lets you specify a database to search.

Note: EMBASE has two-letter drug descriptors (e.g., IT) which can be linked to the drug name.

3. SELECT the drug name(s) and keyword for drug interactions limited to titles, descriptors and identifiers. Use FROM and the other three files.

Interstitial pneumonitis is a well documented, rare complication of methotrexate (MTX). We describe a patient with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) taking MTX for more than 3 years who then developed severe interstitial pneumonitis after a third infliximab infusion. Other similar cases are reviewed. Infliximab may potentiate pulmonary toxicity of MTX.
