Find Information on Drug Sales by Class?

TOPIC: Dialog contains a wealth of sources for finding sales information on pharmaceutical products. These sources include business trade literature, company reports, country reports, analysts’ reports, and market research reports. Many of these sources contain tabular data.

In this example we will look at strategies for finding sales information regarding pharmaceutical sales by drug class. Business & Industry (File 9) provides excellent indexing to help you quickly access facts, figures and key events in trade magazines, newsletters, business press, regional newspapers and international business dailies that focus on specific therapeutic areas.

This example shows a simple query on a therapeutic term in the Title field (/TI) and the use of the Dialog RANK command to pinpoint appropriate Product Code numbers (PC=) to use in the search. Additional databases where a similar strategy works include Gale Group PROMT® (File 16), Gale Group Trade & Industry Database (File 148) and TableBase (File 93).

Note the Product Code is alongside the product name. Notice that the RANK list reappears with the top 8 terms. Follow the menu prompt below the list for the next step, which is to EXIT RANK.

5. EXIT RANK.

6. Enter Yes (Y) to confirm and complete the exit from RANK.

7. Search the Product Code (PC=) and the Descriptor “sales” to find articles indexed to those terms.

Note: It is often a good idea to EXPAND the Product Code (e.g., EXPAND PC=283415) and select the appropriate “E” Reference numbers. Then combine with sales/de.

?S PC=283415 AND SALES/DE
720 PC=283415 (ANTIBIOTICS AND SULFONAMIDES, SYSTEMI

8. TYPE a few records in Format 8 to see title, descriptors and publication years.

To select the appropriate record number, look at the range of records in the TYPE command (e.g., 2/8/2).

Note: Some records have been omitted from this display.

Feb. 14--NEW DELHI -- Rise in viral/bacterial infections and a
massive resurgence of epidemics last year led to a huge spurt
in the acute segment (antibiotics and pain killers), surpassing
even that of chronic/lifestyle therapy segment for the first
time in recent years.

Sales of medicines used to treat viral fevers and infective
diseases (systemic anti-infectives) grew by nearly 18 percent,
more than those categorized under digestive tract and
metabolism segment (diabetes and obesity) at 16.44 percent in
2006, according to the latest figures of ORG-IMS.

Anjan Sen, director-pharma marketing, Pfizer says: "Compared to
the last four years, 2006 has seen a change in trends in the
area of acute and chronic therapies. The acute segment has
had a growth spurt whereas chronic therapy has remained the
same. A probable reason for this could be the spread of
chikunguniya that led to an increase in demand for
anti-infectives, pain-killers and anti-pyretics.
Secondly, market growth in 2006 has been driven by
rural segment as more and more firms have decided
to penetrate these markets".

Says Sandeep Gupta CMD, Eli Lilly India, "The
growth in antibiotics and painkillers seem to be
primarily driven by epidemics/ scares liek as
chikungunya, dengue, bird flu (antibiotic prophylaxis)
and increase in water borne diseases. There was
migration towards the more expensive anti-biotics
-- driven both by the rise in puchasing power,
coupled with heightened awareness about the epidemics".
