Find the Initial Registration of a Movie?

TOPIC: A copyright is defined as the exclusive legal right to reproduce, publish, and sell the matter and form of a literary, musical, or artistic work. U.S. Copyrights (File 120) provides access to registration details for all active copyright and mask-work registrations or renewals granted by the U.S. Copyright Office from January 1, 1978 to the present. The database is a fast screening tool for checking the ownership and registration status of a particular work.

In this example you are using keywords in the title (/TI) and named title fields (/NT) to find initial registrations for the movie Last King of Scotland. The Dialog indexing in File 120 lets you limit your search to particular types of works such as motion pictures.

HOW TO...

1. BEGIN in the copyright database (File 120).

2. SELECT individual keywords limited to the title (/TI) and named title (/NT) to retrieve the words in the Title and Named Title fields. Use proximity connectors to take the place of the word OF.

3. SELECT the resulting set (S1) and limit it using RC=X to restrict the set to records dealing with motion pictures, photoplays and filmstrips.

Note: You can limit this set to initial registrations using /C if you have too many records.

4. TYPE all records in S2 using Format 6 or FREE to see the titles of the copyright records in the set.

5. TYPE all records in S2 using Format 9 or FULL to receive all complete records in the set.

Note the Library of Congress Retrieval Code is X for motion pictures and the status is registered.
