Find Copyrights By a Specific Author That Have Been Renewed? TOPIC: In the United States, books published before 1964 had to get their copyrights renewed at the Library of Congress Copyright Office in their 28th year, or they'd fall into the public domain. Up until recently, renewed copyrights ran an additional 47 years (75 years total), rounded up to the end of the calendar year. A copyright extension bill signed in 1998 extended copyrights still in force for an additional 20 years. U.S. Copyrights (File 120) provides access to registration details for all active copyright and mask-work registrations or renewals granted by the U.S. Copyright Office from January 1, 1978 to the present. The database is a fast screening tool for checking the ownership and registration status of a particular work, as well as a particular individual's or entity's portfolio of registered works. In this example you are looking for all copyrights by the author Robert Ludlum that have been renewed. You can use the Status field (ST=) to find renewed records.
