Find Initial Registrations for
Serial Publications?
TOPIC: Serial publication records contain information on the initial registration and renewal of a multi-part work issued or intended to be issued in successive parts bearing numerical or chronological designations and are intended to be continued indefinitely. The classification "serial" includes periodicals, newspapers, magazines, bulletins, newsletters, annuals, journals, proceedings of societies and other similar works.
U.S. Copyrights (File 120) provides access to registration details for all active copyright and mask-work registrations or renewals granted by the U.S. Copyright Office from January 1, 1978 to the present. The database is a fast screening tool for checking the ownership and registration status of a particular serial work, as well as a particular individual's or entity's portfolio of registered works.
In this example you are looking for the registration of the serial publication T H E Journal, an educational journal. You are not sure if the title is THE with no spaces and punctuation, T.H.E. with punctuation or T H E with spaces only between the letters. You will need to try different spellings.

1. BEGIN in the copyright database (File 120).
2. SELECT the journal name using different spellings. Note that no results are retrieved for S1 because punctuation is stripped from the records.
3. SELECT individual keywords limited to the title (/TI) and named title fields (/NT).
4. Limit the results in Set 2 (S2) to serial documents (/S).
5. SELECT the journal title as a phrase limiting to title (/TF) and named title fields (/NF).
6. Combine sets.
7. Limit the results in Set 5 (S5) to serial publications (/S). |
