Search Scenario

The Search Scenario that follows will form the basis for the information requests and help guide you through the course.

Chris is a research scientist, who works for MedSea, a biomedical firm whose major projects deal with marine science. She has been in charge of doing most of the scientific searching on Dialog for the entire firm. With business expanding and many scientists now familiar with online research, management has indicated that most of the scientists in the firm will need to be responsible for their own online searching. While Chris will continue to do most of the complex searches, she has been tasked with training other research scientists on how to search Dialog for basic scientific information.

To roll out this new idea, management calls a meeting and asks that Chris identify the "next step."

Here's what Chris has to say to the staff:

As you all know, I have been doing most of the online scientific research for the company for several years now. I got the answers from Dialog, an information databank, and now I want to share with you how you can get those same answers for yourself.

"To help you, I am putting together an Introduction to Searching Classic Dialog as an online course that you can run through our Intranet. I want you to take just a half-hour or so a day and review the lessons and practices. It should only take you about 4-5 hours to complete everything. By the end of the course, you should be capable of doing your own basic scientific research. Throughout the course, I will get requests for information, and then take you step-by-step through the process I would go through to answer the requests.

"I think you will find the process interesting. The course materials should be available on the Intranet tomorrow."
