Now you try it...

Use the ONTAP (ONline Training And Practice) databases indicated to practice your searches.

Log onto DialogWeb.

Before starting Lesson 2, go online to answer the questions below. The material will reinforce your understanding of the information you just learned in Lesson 1 and provide you with additional information about appropriate databases for our Frontier merger topic.

When you have finished all of the questions, click the Check Yourself icon below to view correct answers.

Exercise 1:

Brian asked for information about uses of coral for use in eye implants. Try the Biological Sciences sub-category for this search.

Here's what I want you to do.

First, create your search strategies; then try logging on to DialogWeb and performing the requested searches using ONTAP DIALINDEX (File 290). Remember, you will need to logon using the practice (ONTAP) user id and password provided in order to search at no cost.

Note: We are using the DialogWeb interface for DIALINDEX since it is easy to use and can be used for free via the Web.

Use DIALINDEX to browse for appropriate databases containing articles on coral used for eye implants. Use the same procedure we just reviewed, only choose the Biological Sciences sub-category instead of the Medicine sub-category. Answer the questions online using DIALINDEX:

  1. Which category from the eight main ones would you choose to select information on coral used for eye implants?
  2. Which sub-category would you select for this topic from the categories listed?
  3. What search terms would you use to search for coral use for eye implants?
  4. Look at the description of the MEDLINE database (File 155) by clicking the title of the database.
  5. Run the search we just did in the Medicine category on coral used as a bone substitute in the Biological Sciences category.
