Now you try it...

Use the ONTAP (ONline Training And Practice) databases indicated to practice your searches.

View the current ONTAP user numbers and passwords. Remember that you must use the ONTAP user number and password to avoid incurring charges for your practice searches.

Log onto DialogClassic.

Exercise 6: Plan the following subject searches. Write down search terms and synonyms. Use appropriate truncation, proximity connectors, and logical operators.

First, create search strategies for the following searches. Then try logging on to DialogClassic and performing the requested searches. Remember, you will need to logon using the practice (ONTAP) user id and password provided in order to search at no cost.

Remember that search strategies can be written in more than one way!

  1. Locate patents covering video or optical disc manufacturing technology. The requester would like to see just the first five titles of any patents found. (Use ONTAP Derwent World Patent Index, File 280).
  2. Find patents related to smoke detectors. (Use ONTAP CLAIMS, File 279).
  3. Find patents related to cooking with a microwave oven. (Use ONTAP CLAIMS, File 279).
