Now you try it...

We have just reviewed major features of Prous Science Daily Essentials (Files 458,459), Drug Data Report (File 452) and Drugs of the Future (File 453). We have also looked at details of records from Files 452 and 453. Now, it's your turn to practice.

  1. In which database (File 452,453,458, 459) will you find the following fields:

    1. Context Tables
    2. Chemical image
    3. A news report from the last month
    4. List of references
    5. Synthesis scheme

  2. Write search strategies to retrieve the following information:

    1. Find the Context Table and related chemical structure images for treatment of colorectal cancer (Therapeutic Class 75025)
    2. What format would you use to retrieve a chemical structure image?
    3. What search strategy would you use to find Merck as a patent assignee in File 452?
    4. Find antimigraine drugs developed by Merck. Are there any antimigraine drugs that have been launched in the last couple of years?
Hint: Do this second part in Daily Essentials.
    5. Which compounds with pain-relieving (analgesic) activity have an indazole group in the molecule? Use therapeutic class (/tc) and chemical name (/cn).

Learn More #1:

There are two ways to put the search strategy together:

  1. We can put all of the search terms together in one search statement. If this method is used, and we use AND and OR operators in the same search query, we must group the synonyms using parentheses.

Example: s (threat? or hazard?) and (radon or asbestos)

  2. We can create a separate set for each concept and then group the sets together.

    Examples: s threat? or hazard?
    s radon or asbestos
    s s1 and s2

We are using Method 2 in our search strategy.
