Search Considerations
Step 1: Use the Information Checklist
Look at Brian's request. What information do we already have? What do we need to know? Here are some things to consider.
- Is the subject clearly defined?
- What is the purpose of the search? A brief overview? A comprehensive search?
- What perspective on the topic is needed? Academic? Technical? Popular?
- What quantity of information is expected?
- What type of information is needed? Complete article? An abstract? Factual data?
- Are there any known sources? Authors? Journals? Papers?
Brian's request tells us he wants:
- A few articles about PlayStation 2 as it relates to the interactive video game market.
- An article from the popular press, like a newspaper.
- An immediate response, so we won't have time to get paper copies of any stories.
This is a very simple request. There are other factors we might add
to our checklist for a good search. ![]()
