Using Search Commands in Dialog

BEGIN

I will use several basic commands in the Command Search option. The first one is the BEGIN command to enter the database(s) of choice.

Take a look at an example of the BEGIN command below:

Command Example When to Use It
BEGIN
B
begin 155
b 155
b155,172
b medicine
Use BEGIN with a file number to specify the database(s) to be searched.

In Lesson 2 we looked at the description of File 155, MEDLINE. It appears to have the kind of information we need for this topic. Since we want only the current data, we can use File 4, which contains information from 1983 to the present.

From the Dialog Command Search page, I will type in the BEGIN command and the database number.

begin 155

Search Tip 3-1:

In Lesson 1, we began our search by clicking Databases and using DIALINDEX to identify appropriate databases for our search.

From the DIALINDEX Results page, clicking the BEGIN DATABASES button automatically inserts the BEGIN command into the Command text box.
