Search Scenario
The Search Scenario that follows will form the basis for the information requests and help guide you through the course.
Teri works for Cruz, Tilley, Weeks, and Associates, a large legal firm that specializes in patents. She has been in charge of doing most of the patent searching on Dialog for the entire firm. With business expanding, the managing partners have indicated that most employees in the firm will need to be responsible for their own basic patent online searching. While Teri will continue to do any complex searching, she has been tasked with training other attorneys, para-legals, and legal assistants on how to search Dialog for basic patent information.
To roll out this new idea, the senior partner calls a meeting and asks that Teri identify the "next step." Here's what Teri has to say to the staff:
"As you all know, I have been doing most of the patent research for the firm for several years now. I got the answers from Dialog, an information databank, and now I want to share with you how you can get those same answers for yourself.
"To help you, I am putting together an Introduction to Searching DialogWeb as an online course that you can run through on our Intranet. I want you to take just a half-hour or so a day and review the lessons and practices. It should only take you about 4-5 hours to complete everything. By the end of the course, you should be capable of doing your own basic patent research. Throughout the course, I will pass on requests for information, and then take you step-by-step through the process I would go through to answer the requests.
"I think you will find the process interesting. The course materials should be available on the Intranet tomorrow."
