Planning a Search: Summary

In Lesson 2 we reviewed the basic commands necessary to conduct a Dialog search. Here is a summary of the basic commands we just learned.

Use BEGIN with a file number to specify the database(s) to be searched.
EXPAND

Use EXPAND to verify the spelling of a term and to view similar entries.

Use SELECT to create a set of records (e.g., s1) that contains the specified terms.

We conducted a search using the prefix PN= to search for a patent number. We viewed what this search would look like conducted in File 654, U.S. Patents Fulltext using DialogWeb.

This search process is one that we will continue to follow as we perform more searches on DialogWeb.
