Basic Patent Searches — Part 2

Searching Application Numbers

Application numbers, like patent numbers, have a consistent Dialog format that permits cross-file searching. We must always use a two-digit country code with the application number.

Tip 5-2

Formats for searching application numbers are listed in the table below.

Dialog Format Format Description
AN=CC NNNNNNNN AN=US 68201 For countries with a continuing series, enter the two-letter country code, a space, then the one- to eight- digit serial number with no leading zeroes.
AN=CC YYNNNNNN
AN=CC YYYYNNNNNN
AN=GB 8331698 AN=GB 198331698 For countries with an annual series, enter the two-letter country code, a space, then two digits or four digits to represent the year, followed by the one- to six- digit serial number

Search Tip 5-2:

We can use the /PR suffix to search for Priority Application Numbers (the first application filed for the invention).

Example:
s an=us 400798/pr

Search Tip 5-3:

In the U.S., Application Numbers are called Serial Numbers.

The series part of the serial number (e.g., 07/) is not used for searching.
