Refine Search

A search history page appears showing a set of records containing the number of records I found with my company name search.

seach history

Note that there are quite a number of entries. These can represent different locations for Apple Computer or subsidiaries.

We can restrict our search to the headquarters location using the prefix for special feature (SF=).

   s s1 and sf=headquarters

Tip 1-3

seach history

The search history page shows that I have refined my search to one entry.

I am now ready to view the record from my search that contains the headquarters location for Apple Computer.

I want to view Set 2. Since I have only one record, I can just click the display button next to Set 2, or I can enter the TYPE command:

   type s2/full/1

Tip 1-4

As you can see from the sample above, a Duns record gives the name, address, telephone number, type of business, SIC codes, and whether it is a public company. Dun and Bradstreet also provides a DUNS number, a unique number used by D&B to identify a specific company. Tip 1-5

For more in-depth information on a company's solvency, operations, and profitability, Dun and Bradstreet produces a Business Information Report (BIR). Tip 1-6

To see a sample search for a BIR, click here.

Search Tip 1-3:

Duns identifies both ultimate and headquarter locations.

The term "headquarters" in D&B refers to a main division of a company; thus, there can be several headquarters.

Search Tip 1-4:

Use the DISPLAY Button to view records or use the TYPE command (abbreviated T) to display results in a specified format.

The TYPE command has three parts:

Set number/format/range of records

All three parts must be included.

Set Format Range of Records
type s# / free / 1-3
Examples:
type s1/free/1-5
t s2/short/1
t s3/medium/1,2

Search Tip 1-5:

D&B identifies each company in its database with a unique nine-digit DUNS number. This number can be used to search for the company in other D&B files.

Example:
select DN=02-184-1242

This search would retrieve the Stroh Brewery Company corporate headquarters location record.

Search Tip 1-6:

A D&B Business Information Report (BIR) provides extensive information about a specific company's operations and financials.

We can use the DUNS number to retrieve the report.

Examples:
report duns#/bir
report s1/bir/1

Other reports available are: Payment Analysis Report (PAR) and Supplier Evaluation Report (SER).
