Lesson 2: IMS R&D Focus (File 445/955)

About IMS R&D Focus...

Key points about this file are:

  • Contains two types of records which correspond to the monthly print publication R&D Focus (Drug Profile records) and also incorporates R&D Drug News (Drug News records), the weekly news service that reports on the changes occurring in the dynamic world of international R&D.

  • Information provided includes: full synonyms, licensing status, patent summary, development history, commercial potential, company activity, and scientific and commercial summaries. It also contains abstracts of significant scientific papers.

  • Provides assessments of commercial potential, projected market share, and anticipated sales, quoting company estimates, as well as external analysts' predictions. Commercial impact, versus scientific data summaries, receives greater emphasis in this database.

  • File 445 is publicly available; File 955 is available only to subscribers of R&D Focus and R&D Drug News.

  • Updated weekly.

  • Drug Profile Records provides a comprehensive review of a drug—a snapshot of all aspects of a drug's development.

  • Much of the information covered cannot be found elsewhere. The file contains two unique fields: the lab code field (CD) and the Nomenclature field (NC).

  • File 445 is the only one in the pipeline directory group that includes all three indications: pharmacological action (in many records), therapeutic class code, and clinical indication. It does NOT include molecular formulas.

  • Indexing is based the anatomic EPhMRA/IMS therapeutic classification scheme. Note that each file has variations. Do not assume that codes are equivalent across files.

  • Contains concise summaries of basic patent information.
