Course Description

This free, self-paced course provides you with an introduction to search basics on DialogWeb. The seven (7) lessons in the course are designed to be completed in order. However, you do not need to complete the course at one sitting.

Plan on spending approximately 45 minutes for each lesson, or about 4-5 hours to complete the entire course.


Before you start the course:

  1. Review the course Search Scenario; it will give you a glimpse of what the course is about.
  2. Review the class structure and course reguirements for tips on how to get the most out of the course.
  3. Go to Lesson 1 to begin the course.

Course Contents

Lesson 1: Choosing a Database
Illustrates the use of the online databases selection tool, also known as DIALINDEX, to help you locate the best databases for your search topic.

Lesson 2: Planning a Search Strategy
Discusses the use of search terms, truncation, and operators to formulate a search strategy.

Lesson 3: Using Search Commands in DialogWeb
Identifies the basic search commands and illustrates a Dialog search.

Lesson 4: Managing Search Results
Shows how to display, save, and print your search results.

Lesson 5: Refining a Search (Part 1)
Discusses tools and techniques to help you refine your searches.

Lesson 6: Refining a Search (Part 2)
Discusses how to make effective use of the Dialog Bluesheets, and introduces the EXPAND command to retrieve specific information.

Lesson 7: Wrapping-up the Course
Identifies other Dialog tools and training to help with your information needs.
