Introduction

In this lesson we'll use the basic commands for retrieving information from the Dialog search system. We'll also start our trademark searching by finding information on a known trademark. Here is a request that I got from Ray, the attorney who is representing one of our clients. This request is typical of one that you can do for yourself.

In the San Diego Business Journal the following notice appeared.

"Lego Group started construction of a Legoland at Carlsbad Ranch in 1997. The Legoland will be located 30 miles north of San Diego, CA., east of Interstate 5. It is scheduled to open in the spring of 1999. The theme...will utilize 30 million Lego bricks to create displays..."

Legoland officially opened last summer for business. Our client wants to see the trademark and the design, if available, that is used for Legoland. He is pretty sure of the spelling, LEGOLAND, for the mark. Once he sees this one, he will have more work for us. I'd like it ASAP.

Ray's client seems certain of the exact trademark name. This should be an easy search. Nevertheless, it will serve to demonstrate the basic commands which are used for all searches on Dialog.

When we know the exact text of the trademark, we can use the Exact Trademark name to conduct our search. Also, if we want to look up a record and we don't have a registration or serial number, we can use the same search technique. In Lesson 2, we will look at additional search techniques for retrieving trademarks that contain similar words and sounds.

For this lesson, I will show you how I would go about answering this request—in other words, the processes I would go through. Let's begin with a review of the basic commands.
