CABICODES. Records in the CAB ABSTRACTS database have been classified using a scheme of codes called CABICODES. The CABICODES consist of a hierarchical thesaurus that divides the subject coverage of the CAB Abstracts database into 23 major sections. Each section then includes a series of codes that divides that subject into more specific subjects. The codes themselves are typically used to code for subjects which would be difficult to describe with keywords alone. There are approximately 250 CABICODES. CABICODES have been applied to records to indicate the broad subject areas within which they fall, and consist of five characters: two identical alphabetic characters and three digits (e.g., EE450, KK100, NN453). Records are usually indexed with up to seven codes.

The CABICODES table includes modifications to old codes. As a result of this some codes have two name equivalents. Therefore truncating is recommended to get all records with the same code, e.g., S CC=FF020? If the form of entry in the CC= index or in the CN= index is unknown, use the EXPAND to verify the form of entry. The appropriate entry can be selected from the index, e.g.,
CABICODES enable searchers to locate general subject categories and to exclude irrelevant hits from their searches. CAB Thesaurus. Records in the CAB ABSTRACTS database also have descriptors. Descriptors are subject index terms and phrases assigned to each record to characterize the substantive content of the original document. Descriptors are assigned from the CAB thesaurus. With a total of 59,000 terms (48,500 preferred terms; 10,500 non-preferred terms) it is the largest thesaurus covering agriculture and related subjects. There are comprehensive lists of terms for the science and technology of plants and animal production and the biology of all organisms. There are also terms for indexing the health and nutrition of animals and humans. The disciplines covered include chemistry, physics, earth sciences, physiology, genetics, ecology, economics and the social sciences. It is particularly strong on the pathogens, parasites and pests of plants, animals and humans. Descriptors are indexed by individual word and by multiword phrase and may be selected as single words using proximity operators or as the complete phrase. Descriptors may include hyphens, commas, or other punctuation. Retain exact spacing and punctuation when selecting the descriptor as the complete phrase, e.g., SELECT AUJESZKY'S DISEASE/DE. If the descriptor or identifier (non-preferred term) includes a slash (/) or some other character that cannot be selected directly, the descriptor phrase must be enclosed in single or double quotation marks, e.g., SELECT "DOG AND CAT BEHAVIOUR"/ID. Use the proximity operators (W) or (N) to replace all punctuation when selecting descriptors as single words:
Biosystematic or Organism Descriptor (/OD) and Geographic Name (/GN) are included in the descriptor field and can be selected using either /DE or /OD and /DE or /GN respectively:
Broader Terms are included in the thesaurus but they have to be selected using /BT. Broader terms are higher thesaurus terms for all terms in the OD and GN fields. Broader Terms are available for living organisms, chemicals, and geographic regions only:
Online Thesaurus. An online thesaurus is available to verify a controlled term. Use the EXPAND command to determine whether a word or a phrase is appropriate as a search term:
Note the RT column. The word or phrase may have related terms—words or phrases that may represent the same concept, but may not be alphabetically close to the term you entered. To view the related terms EXPAND again, referencing the appropriate E number:
At any point, you can select appropriate reference numbers to create sets of the terms. EXPANDing on a term within parentheses is a way to directly access the Related Terms display (rather than expanding twice):
Within most R-numbered lists, a column labeled "Type" shows the hierarchical relationships among the terms in the list. Typical entries in this column include:
Using Explode. The Explode feature is designed to take advantage of the hierarchical organization of online thesaurus. It speeds retrieval by automatically selecting a term plus narrower related terms. To Explode a term, SELECT the term with an ending exclamation mark:
