Electronic
Redistribution and Archiving Made Easy
Do you need to distribute
multiple copies of Dialog®
output throughout your organization? Would the ability to legally store
search results on an intranet, LAN, or other internal database make your work easier?
Would you like to be able to make and distribute additional copies of Dialog
output?
If you have answered
yes to any of these questions, you should take advantage of our powerful,
yet easy-to-use Electronic Redistribution and Archiving Service, Dialog
ERA.
Copyright infringement
is a major concern in any organization that relies on information from
outside sources. With litigation on the increase, companies are having
to pay enormous fines for copyright infringement. Now is the time to take
advantage of Dialog's convenient and economical approach
to copyright compliance.
Dialog ERA enables
you to electronically store and distribute Dialog search results to coworkers
in your organization. An organization is defined by the specific legal
entity, which is listed in the customer information block of the Dialog
Standard Service agreement on file at Dialog. The definition includes
your company's employees, divisions, and branch offices.
You now have an easy
way to make sure your redistribution and archival activities comply with
copyright law. While searching on Dialog, you can order additional copies,
purchase the right to make additional paper or electronic copies on your
own, or purchase the right to electronically store (archive) information
from participating Dialog databases in your company's in-house system.
With Dialog ERA you
can access over 500 databases (enter HELP ERA while online for a complete
list of participating databases), find the results you need, purchase
redistribution and/or archival rights for your organization's redistribution
and archival needs, and then receive the search results through a variety
of delivery methods. Information gathering and disseminating have never
been easier!

Dialog
ERA Options and How They Work
The Dialog ERA service
uses the COPIES n, REDIST n, and ARCHIVE n options that work with
standard Dialog output commands.
top
COPIES n
COPIES n (where n is the number of copies requested) is used with the PRINT command
for paper copies. COPIES n provides from Dialog one print copy plus n
number of copies requested (Dialog prints and mails the additional paper
copies). This option allows you to request up to 100 copies. If more copies
are requested, the Dialog system will ignore COPIES n and default to the
regular PRINT command. You can send copies of your search results to another
person in your organization by using an alternate address (see the following
sample search).
COPIES n can be abbreviated
to COP n. Since COPIES n is only available for output printed on paper,
it is unlikely that you will use COPIES n with the ARCHIVE n option (see below). COPIES n and REDIST n (see below) cannot
be included on the same command line, as they provide the same redistribution
rights; if they are used together, you will receive a system error message.
Command Examples:
- PRINT Sn/Format/Items
COPIES n (Abbreviated COPY or COP)
- PRINT Sn/Format/Items
COP 10 SOLO ADDR ACJONES

REDIST n
REDIST
n (where n is the number of additional electronic
or paper copies you will make) provides from Dialog one original copy
and grants you the right to make n number of copies of your search results
to use within your organization. (Note that COPIES and REDIST provide
the same redistribution rights; COPIES supplies you with the copies and
REDIST gives the right to make copies.) REDIST n is available for use
with the TYPE, DISPLAY, REPORT, and PRINT commands. REDIST n can be abbreviated
RED n.
top
ARCHIVE n
ARCHIVE
n (where n is the number of relevant employees who will have access to the information) provides one original copy and grants you the right to electronically store search results retrieved from Dialog, either for use by an internal application or an intranet, and provide access to n number of people in your organization. ARCHIVE n only covers the number of relevant people with access capability to the internal application's single machine/server or the intranet where the data resides. ARCHIVE n is available for use with the TYPE, DISPLAY, REPORT, and PRINT commands. ARCHIVE n can be abbreviated ARC n. The number of relevant employees is defined as those employees for whom the type of information being archived is within the scope of their job responsibilities and interests. It is usually a larger group than those that actually do access the information, but, for specialized information in particular, it may be a smaller group than the entire number of employees with access to the internal application or intranet.
Both the REDIST and
ARCHIVE options can be used in combination with each other; they can be
entered in any order. REDIST used in combination with ARCHIVE grants you
the right to make copies from records stored electronically. Separate
charges will result from the use of both options.
The COPIES, REDIST,
and ARCHIVE options can be used with the Dialog Alert(sm) service, and
redistribution is an option on the Menu Alert Dialog Alert Options
menu. Simply include the desired option with the Dialog Alert PRINT statement
when using command mode.
All of the Dialog
ERA options are available using OneSearch®. If there are files in
your OneSearch that do not support these options, a system message will
warn you that the Dialog output being generated will not include output
from the files not participating in Dialog ERA. While using FROM in a
OneSearch session, you must enter the FROM option as
the last part of your command line, e.g., PRINT S1/9/1-5 REDIST 10 ADDR
ACTEAM FROM 634.
If a REDIST n, COPIES
n, or ARCHIVE n option is included in a PRINT statement to an alternate
address within your organization, you are providing the redistribution
rights to distribute copies or to store the data electronically from that
address.
Command Examples:
- TYPE Sn/Format/Items
REDIST n (Abbreviated RED)
- TYPE Sn/Format/Items
ARCHIVE n (Abbreviated ARC)

Financial: Nissan battery plant sparks green renewal:
pounds 200m investment may pave way for electric car:
North-east could be hub of low carbon project
KATIE ALLEN
GUARDIAN
July 21, 2009
Journal Code: FGDN Language: English
Record Type: FULLTEXT
Word Count: 628
Carmaker Nissan has pledged to invest more than pounds 200m in a new
rechargeable battery factory in Sunderland boosting the north-east of
England's drive to become a leading centre for green technology.
The region hopes to swap a legacy of shipbuilding, steam engines and coalmining for a pioneering role in the manufacture of electric cars and lorries. Nissan's announcement yesterday of plans for a rechargeable lithium-ion battery plant was accompanied by Gordon Brown's confirmation that the government is making the north-east the UK's low carbon economic area specialising in "ultra-low carbon vehicles."
Against a backdrop of job losses and unrelenting uncertainty for
workers at British car factories, the prime minister hailed Nissan's new battery plant as a step towards economic recovery.
He sought to raise hopes that the Japanese company could choose its north-east base for a new European green car operation over a rival facility in Spain.
"Nissan's investment in a new battery plant and its hope to start
producing electric vehicles here in Sunderland is great news for the local economy, creating up to 350 direct jobs and creating and safeguarding hundreds more in the associated supply chain," said Brown.
"Sunderland could now be a strong contender to produce electric
vehicles for Nissan in Europe, and we will continue to work with Nissan to ensure this happens." . . . .

Tracking Records After Your Initial Search
The Dialog ERA service
also provides an option to report additional copies or archival rights
after your initial TYPE, DISPLAY, or PRINT request. This "after-the-fact"
feature allows you to record information about records you have copied
or archived anytime after the original output arrives. Simply enter the
REDIST or the ARCHIVE command while
online in an inexpensive database (e.g., File 415, Dialog Bluesheets),
and supply the answers to the prompted questions. You can also enter after-the-fact
information on a single command line.
To record after-the-fact activities, you will need the
following information before logging on:
- File number where the output originated (one file number
per transaction)
- Format number of the record(s) (if a user-defined format
was used, you must match it to the closest predefined format number)
- Number of original records copied
- Number of electronic or paper copies made (for REDIST)
or number of employees that have access to the record(s) (for ARCHIVE)
Note that REDIST and ARCHIVE are the only commands available
when recording after the fact.
Some of the databases
participating in the Dialog ERA service will require the accession number
for the specific record that was copied or archived in after-the-fact
tracking. The Information Provider of the databases requiring accession
number tracking must pass on royalty fees to individual publishers. In
order to do this, they must know which specific records in their databases
were redistributed or archived. The accession number is the quickest way
to pinpoint the exact record in the database that had the redistribution
or archival activity. Refer online to HELP ERA for a list of databases
that require accession numbers.
Databases that do not require accession number tracking
can do so because of the redistribution rights arranged for that database
(in many cases the Information Provider is the sole owner of the records).

Redistribution Pricing
When you use the
REDIST or COPIES option, standard Dialog prices are incurred by taking
the standard Dialog price of the format designated and then multiplying
it by a pricing multiplier that is determined by the number of "copies"
requested. The pricing multiplier is multiplied by the database's current
per-record, per-format cost, or per-REPORT element, when applicable.
Print format x Multiplier = Redistribution Charge
The ARCHIVE option has a different multiplier table because
it is based on the number of employees in your organization that have access
to the archived data.
Note that after-the-fact transactions use the PRINT record
price, rather than the TYPE record price, and the cost of the record(s)
requested for the original output is subtracted from the total charge, since
you have already paid for that record(s). Each completed after-the-fact
transaction will display an estimated cost per transaction.
To determine estimated costs before entering a transaction,
consult HELP RATES nnn, where nnn is the file number. You can also display
a cost estimate by entering a PRINT command that contains the intended Dialog
ERA option(s), and then cancel the print with the PRINT CANCEL command.
All redistribution
and archival costs will be displayed in the Dialog cost estimator, which
appears when you change files, enter LOGOFF or LOGOFF HOLD, or when you
enter a COST command. Dialog ERA charges will also appear on your invoice;
see below for a sample invoice.
