Main Patent Records in the CLAIMS^® Databases

In the following example, the Term Qualifier option is used to limit retrieval to records for the Main Patent. In the CLAIMS®/US Patents (File 340) database, patents relating to cat litter are identified by a keyword in title search. The MAP PN command saves these codes in a temporary SearchSave, and specifies that the qualifier "/MP" be appended to each search term. The suffix-code qualifier /MP limits retrieval to the Main Patent record when the SearchSave is EXECUTEd in another file.

The SearchSave is EXECUTEd in US Patents Fulltext (File 654) in order to retrieve the fulltext and images for these patents. The application of the /MP suffix can be seen in the search results, because the Patent Number searched always appears in the "Main Patent" field rather than in a field designated for numbers referenced as Continuations, Continuations-in-Part or Divisionals.
